Has anyone else's clinic said no to a double transfer?

Hi

Just that really.

Someone told me their clinic have stopped double transfers due to Covid.

I was planning to have a double on my next FET.

Anyone else hears this?

It's up to your clinic. I asked for a double transfer and was told me because my eggs were good quality. They said they would only do a double transfer with poor quality embryos. I think this varies from clinic to clinic but in England they aren't keen to do it. The HFEA gives all clinics a target that double pregnancies should be under and they get penalised if they go over the target as I understand it.

Thanks Pink

But i was targeting more with the risks of Covid and twin pregnancies being the reason for no double transfers and new measures being put in place since covid

I've requested a double and sticking to my guns. But I'm 37 and also egg quality hasn't been great thus far. They said ok to anything less than an AA grade blastocyst. We've spent £35k with the clinic so far and said we simply didn't have any more money for single transfers and what we have left in the freezer is it for us. I'm also getting to the age where if it worked I probably couldn't convince DH to have another baby and I'd hate to think of everything we've been through (miscarriages ectopics failed IVF) to then leave some in the freezer and then destroy them

(I did have a double last year too and ended in ruptured ectopic so I can understand they are concerned about risks at this time - but I have no tubes left after that which is why they've agreed to it again)

@bearsmum15 I'll ask my clinic for you, I'm heading there tomorrow. I have poor quality embryos, so double transfer has always been a possibility for me. I'm doing a fresh transfer so if I get two blastos I want them both to go in, as my frozen embryos did not fare well.

ivfgottostaypositive · 25/05/2020 09:01

I also think they'll Use any "excuse" they can think of to decline double transfers - they have to meet target sets by the regulatory body to keep multiple transfers below the naturally occurring rate of multiples. But multiple pregnancies do put more strain on the NHS with the amount of additional Monitoring etc so they are not writing in that regard

I did my research and countered a lot of their arguments

  • risk of ectopic zero now I have no tubes
  • blastocyst quality thus far hasn't been fresh so risk of both implanting is low
  • I've had 2 failed transfers already
  • I'm 37 and likely this pregnancy will be our last to complete our pregnancy
  • clinic rate of multiples is WELL below natural average
  • I am high risk for miscarriages anyway so I would have close monitoring whether it was single or doubles

If you are in your 20s or early 30s and you've got got quality blastocysts or this is your first transfer then whether there is a pandemic or not you've got no chance of getting a double transfer x

@ivfgottostaypositive my Frozens are good quality (5AB & 5BB) and out of all blastocysts ive had transferred (5 in total) all but one ended in a BFP. My 4th, i had 2 transferred, and i was pregnant with twins (lost one at 8 wks)
So my clinic may not be in a rush to transfer 2. But like you, my finances wont stretch to 2 separate transfers nor do i want them too, for the sake of doing this for nearly 10 years, im done with it all.

@HJF84 yes please, that would be great if you could. Thanks

@Bearsmum15

I'm with Create and have a 4aa frozen which they said they would transfer with a 4bb as a last report - the others I have frozen both are 4bb also and they've said they can go as doubles transfers and then hoping to get 2 more blastocysts from this next and final egg collection. They only won't do two aa together though

I think you just have to be firm with your clinic - although with getting a BFP on every round they might say no - seems like they'll only transfer if its a low chance of ending in twins (or more) whereas you've have a high chance of multiples

Bearsmum15 · 25/05/2020 13:36

I originally thought that perhaps HFEA where recommending on single transfers. Must just be individual decisions of the clinics.
I will try my best to talk them round. Although, i dont want twins at all. But want to maximise my chances and i want this to be my last cycle..

I was allowed 2 at the age of 39 at the end of last year. We have 3 in the freezer and we will do a double and then a single, or vice versa. Tough if they don’t like it, lm the customer and lm paying.

Bearsmum15 · 25/05/2020 16:08

Hi, thanks but im meaning more because of Covid and not being allowed to transfer more than 1.

JeNeBaguetteRien · 25/05/2020 16:29

Bear, if other UK clinics will still do double transfers in principle or in reality then it seems any reluctance is due to your clinic more than the HFEA, although they may be basing it also on the fact that you don't want twins.
I know you said you're so done with all this, which I understand, but if you really don't want twins is it worth the risk. I've always wanted twins so it wouldn't bother me (I know the risks, I mean it was always my romantic notion even before TTC).

How much does a FET cost roughly?

Bearsmum15 · 26/05/2020 09:49

We are stuck between a rock and a hard place...
Hubby doesnt want to spend anymore money on TTC and i cant throw away a good quality embryo.

I also havent got amy more cycles in me..

I am also under the recurrent miscarriage team having suffered 4 miscarriages.

Who knows what the right thing to do is, but what i do know is that i will massively regret throwing that last embryo away, if this last cycle doesnt work.

FET cost about £1300.

i would stick to your guns and explain like you just have to the clinic there is of course risk with the double but then if should be your choice, my clinic have always said that but agreed with the 1 as we had time to do another if we wanted

i wanted to do 2 last time but dh said he wanted to spend it out so we did ,

ivfgottostaypositive · 26/05/2020 17:41

You can try sticking to your guns but I suspect a lot of clinics will just say ok then but you have to wait an indeterminate amount of time until the covid risk reduces sufficiently so it's a choice between 1 now or 2 in 6 months to a year?

How old are you OP?

Bearsmum15 · 26/05/2020 19:26

Im 35.

My husband is alot older than me so we/he are not willing to wait.

I have spoken to other ladies on other forums that have suggested their clinics are fine with double transfer.

If they only allow 1, then 1 it will be i guess. 😏
