Newly diagnosed with PCOS - help

Around 9 months ago my periods completely stopped (whilst on a course of Roaccutane but GP is certain this isn't linked) I have been back and forth to who has done bloods etc which were normal. I have had a scan which showed PCOS along with symptoms such as weight gain/acne so therefore I have been referred to gynaecology.

Has anyone with PCOS conceived? I wanted to TTC ASAP but I'm scared for the future. I am slightly overweight (not massively) and I'm losing weight.

What were your next steps in trying to conceive?

Yes, I have 2 beautiful children after 4 years of TTC.

Look up inofolic, this is what I used both times and it worked for me in a couple of months each time.

Good luck x

HerstoryVsHistory · 15/02/2020 20:36

I've just looked at this. Which website did you buy from? X

Yes two children, no problems conceiving. Pregnant first month of trying for second, few months with first. Don’t panic it doesn’t always follow you will have problems with PCOS. Good luck!

HerstoryVsHistory · 15/02/2020 20:52

How did you get your periods to restart?! I haven't had one for months Sad

I was diagnosed in my twenties and had my ovaries drilled and my periods where better after that, I had a little girl 9months ago at 43 but did get pregnant twice before unfortunately they didn't happen but I got pregnant!! Enquire about the drilling I don't think it's always offered..

Zelda93 · 15/02/2020 21:03

It didn't take me over 20yrs of trying .. sorry that was down to my circumstances having her at 43.. sorry didn't want to stress you thinking it took that long!!!!!!

DollyDaydream70 · 15/02/2020 21:06

Yes, I had my second Son after I was diagnosed with pcos. I find it difficult to lose weight, but I don't have the acne/excess facial hair problems that often come with the condition.

haventaclueeither · 15/02/2020 21:09

Can’t remember the drug name now but I was given something when mine stopped and they started again regular as clockwork. May prescribe Clomid if you do have problems.

user159 · 15/02/2020 21:12

Yes, two months after starting metformin I fell pregnant and now have a one year old. I had to see a specialist consultant to get this drug though. My Gp made the referral after diagnosis and me saying I wanted to TTC now. Good luck!

CaveMum · 15/02/2020 21:16

I was diagnosed with PCOS whilst TTC. I had to have a laparoscopy to check for blocked tubes and had 3 rounds of failed Clomid (it just didn’t make me ovulate) before I was moved onto Ovulation Induction (Daily injections of low dose FSH to stimulate ovaries then an HCG trigger to force ovulation). It took 3 rounds of OI to conceive my daughter (now almost 6) and then another 3 rounds for my son (almost 3).

All I would say is be careful of all the advice to take xyz that well meaning people will give you. You need to do things under the guidance of a Doctor.

Northisterone (think that’s how you spell it) is the drug your Dr will give you to force a bleed and restart your cycle. You’ll then be sent for blood tests on various days during your cycle to see what is going on with your hormone levels.

i have PCOS and a just turned 3 year old and pregnant with number 2. i needed metformin to concieve both times but really had to fight for it (years and years of infrequent periods but doctors weren't keen to give it to me as i wasnt over weight, finally a junior doctor did and i concieved within 2 weeks of taking it first time ans 2 months of taking it second time)

Northisterone stops bleeds, what I think you meant to refer to here was Provera.

CaveMum · 16/02/2020 12:48

Nope, I was never given Provera, only ever Northisterone - take tablets for a week then come off and a few days later an induced bleed appears and i has to take that as the start of a new cycle.

stopchewingeverything · 16/02/2020 13:08

Yep! Fell pregnant after 6 months of trying. I would look at a low GI diet as that helps stabilise your blood glucose levels which is what Metformin is prescribed for.

HerstoryVsHistory · 16/02/2020 18:52

Thanks all. Your information is really helpful. Hopefully I get an appointment through to see the specialist soon.

With Norestherone (that's spelt wrong, I'm sure!) could I not just buy this over the counter to kick start a period? It's the same as the morning after pill isn't it?

Do you all suffer with bad acne? I've always struggled with it. I began Roaccutane which has cleared my face completely but the dermatologist said it can relapse in PCOS sufferers.

I've started ovulation tracking with sticks, do they look like they're getting darker or am I wishful thinking?

In my experience OPK get darker and then lighter and my body tries to ovulate. Last month I had my shortest cycle, 37 days. My graph looked a dream (I chart) this month it's awful. I have been off the pill since jan 2019. Longest cycle 89 days September to December. I have used 4g myo-inositol since spring last year. I've got my last gp appointment Wednesday where I'm hoping to be referred. Found that because I'm not overweight most doctors dismiss my PCOS as minor, it's always mentioned. I've never been pregnant

CaveMum · 17/02/2020 16:24

I have adult acne and dark, thick hair but not the weight gain. In my experience OPKs are useless for PCOS as your hormones are out of kilter - you can get multiple LH surges without ovulation actually happening.

other89 · 20/02/2020 14:20

@HerstoryVsHistory My OPK's look like this in varying degrees over the month but never seem to peak. I'm currently on cycle day 74 so trying to just do them to see if I can catch a peak and ovulation. I'm currently waiting for bloods back from the doctor to see what is causing the lack of periods.

HerstoryVsHistory · 21/02/2020 20:04

Yeah my OPK's are all over the place. One day they're dark and then the next they're not...

I've lost a stone and still no period.

@Other89 what tests are you having done? I had LSH/FSH a few months back but it was ok.

Hi, I was diagnosed with PCOS in October. Immediately started trying to get pregnant, we had unprotected sex twice in a cycle and I was pregnant by the start of November. I had tracked my cycle for six months beforehand and had a very irregular cycle, although I did always bleed so it seems mine was different to your symptoms, but wanted to share my experience with you.

I was very upset when my GP told me. She was kind and told me one positive is you have to only wait a year (I think) until you can get NHS fertility support, compared to women without PCOS.

If I could give you advice, I would say try to relax and not become hyper focussed. I never did ovulation tracking, for example. I know this is easy for me to say as I’m pregnant, but I genuinely was very very worried as my mum took 10 years to conceive me.

I truly believe that because I didn’t expect to get pregnant so quickly (I thought I was too late in my cycle but would start trying to take the pressure off so to speak) it helped me conceive as I was more relaxed. Sending you best wishes xxx

PregnantCat · 22/02/2020 16:58

Should add I really did have all the symptoms - hormones out of place, they saw cysts on transvaginal scan and I had the physical symptoms.

other89 · 22/02/2020 22:42

@HerstoryVsHistory From what I can see on the blood that they have I am being tested for Liver Function Tests, Thyroid Function test, LH&FSH, Calcium Profile (LFE) Testosterone and Prolactin. I don't know if that's just to see/rule anything else out and I'm still waiting to have the first day of my cycle so that I can then get my 21 day Progesterone tests.

@PregnantCat Congratulations! I wish you all the best. It's good that people are conceiving. One of my issues is that I'm not having periods atm so it's practically impossible that I'm able to conceive at the moment. It's so annoying that I only really know if i've ovulated if my period comes and by that time it's too late :(

HerstoryVsHistory · 23/02/2020 19:30

@pregnantcat that's a lovely story, thank you for sharing ❤️ I am praying for a miracle but to be honest, I haven't had a period for ages and I have no signs of ovulation. We have sex regularly but nothing...

@other89 I've had loads of tests for liver function over the last year due to me being on roaccutane... all we're normal.

How long did everyone wait to see a gynaecologist? I still haven't had an appointment letter and I was referred 4 months ago...

OP posts:
Bellesavage · 23/02/2020 19:35

I have pcos and have had 2 pregnancies go to term. I lost 2 stone before TTC though to make sure its effects would be limited. I was told at 28 by the gynaecologist to 'get on with it' as it may be tricky, I wasn't ready but went onto conceive in 5 months ages 30 my first. Ive had about 5 chemical pregnancies and 1 mmc in between my first and my final baby. Im not sure if they're related but I found taking aspirin in the first trimester finally worked for dc2
