Does diet really matter?

I start my first round of icsi in January due to male factor.
We are in our 20s.
My diet isn’t bad but it’s not great either, I try to cook my own food from scratch and I have fruit and vegetables but I also just enjoy myself and eat what I feel like. Over Christmas I have indulged a little and had chocolate/alcohol.
Also going to enjoy myself on New Year’s Eve and have a few drinks. I’m on multivitamins, folic Avis and coq10.
Am I damaging my chances? Did anyone just eat/drank what they wanted and get a bfp?.
I’m actually assuming it’s not going to work first time and seeing it as a sort of practice round.
Btw after Christmas before Down regulating I will be eating better and not drinking alcohol at all.
I also rarely drink anyway so just like to relax over Xmas and enjoy myself while I’ve got the chance and being off work doesn’t help lol.

Have a look at the book ivf diet.
I plan to cut my caffeine down in new year x

Tbh no body knows. I did have to loose quite a bit of weight and prior to transfer I kept my diet as clean as I could. No caffeine, alcohol etc and mostly protein and veggies. I did acupuncture and meditation as well. I was successful first time at 38.

I've no idea if any of this had an impact but I wasn't ready to fail just because I couldn't be bothered to try and do all I could to help my chances.

I agree with @Iboogy...just in case it does make a difference, and you're investing so much time and possible money, and definitely putting your body under pressure, why risk it. I did have a few drinks early in the process, due to the effects of the hormones, but regretted it immediately. Besides that, I did everything I could to make sure my body was ready xxxx

I don’t think it matters that much. I’m pg after icsi due to mfi too. Neither of us moderated our diet or drinking much at all - we eat well but also enjoy a takeaway or burger here and there. Only thing I did was to significantly up the good protein sources in run up to egg collection - salmon, eggs etc. Good luck!

Sorry also took some of the same supplements you are on - ubiquinol x 600 per day, omega 3s, folic acid etc. We made the decision to go for ivf in July and started late July, so by then we had been enjoying the summer and drinking a bit. We don’t smoke. I did cut down caffeine I think as well. I’m 36, in your 20s you have much better chance of success anyway.

For me it’s one of the only things I can control the outcome the process is out of my hands .

I dont think it matters too much tbh (apart from caffeine perhaps)
Ive had 6 cycles of IVF and being pregnant alot of times (lots of miscarriages) but i did have a successful cycle on my 4th and had DS.
All of my cycles, except the last, i was massively focussed on diet and my weight and yes it paid off with my son.

However, this last cycle, i did nothing different apart from caffeine. I barely stuck to my diet (slimming world) i drank a bottle of wine every week until stims and no exercise. I was going in completely with the relaxed approach.
It was my best cycle yet as far as embryo quality goes.
Ive always produced alot of eggs (i have PCOS) but not great quality, so when i was told that out of 24 eggs, 13 were mature and only 5 fertilised, i really thought we would either have nothing to transfer at day 5, or a bad quality embryo.
You could have knocked me down with a feather when i was told that all 5 were still going and 4 were top quality. Never in my life i have had enough good embryos to freeze.
Unfortunately, the fresh transfer ended in a CP but i have a history of MC and probably not to do with my diet.

Good luck

I don't think it makes much difference though caffeine has been linked to miscarriage. I just cut out alcohol and when I did my IVF the nurse told me to drink a pint of milk a day (never seen that anywhere else though) so I did and worked first time. Good luck.

Thankyou for all of your replies. I am going to watch my diet now and not have alcohol at all after New Year’s Eve.
I am more relaxed and find I get stressed when I over think about everything ie what to eat/what not to eat.
Can I ask how do I completely cut caffeine out? I don’t drink coffee and if I do I have decaf and have done that since September. Do I need to cut out chocolate? Tea? Anything else? Thankyou

I drank tea and ate chocolate throughout - I think it's more strong coffee that's an issue and even then its rare it causes issues but I would keep coffee out.

Malyshek · 07/01/2020 10:40

For what it's worth my clinic said 1-2 cups of coffee per day is fine. I also read a study that confirmed this. If you already drink decaf, I wouldn't worry about tea or chocolate.

If you do worry you could switch to rooibos - this is what my mother does as she says she can't sleep when she drinks regular tea later in the day.

Malyshek · 07/01/2020 10:45

PS - for what it's worth I didn't know coffee could be an issue when I had my first attempts and I kept drinking 1-2 cups/day, which is my normal consumption, throughout.

Are you overweight? If not, then I wouldn’t worry too much. Obviously cut down on alcohol and caffeine as others have said. Good luck!

Idontlikeithere1 · 07/01/2020 15:23

I don’t drink coffee at all and have a cup of tea maybe a few times a week at the most so that’s not a problem. I do love chocolate though! But have cut down, I am classed as overweight for my heigh as my bmi is 28 I have been moving a lot more than I used to though to keep it at around 28. Not a big drinker but have been drinking quite a bit over Xmas. Thankyou ! X
