Blocked tubes/clomid

Hi

I was diagnosed with one fully blocked tube and one partially blocked tube 5 years ago and told we would need IVF. We had two children with no intervention and were trying for a third. Our younger child recently died aged nearly 2, we are wondering about restarting the painful process of ttc.

My question is - if I don’t manage a natural pregnancy what would the fertility clinic offer us? We are obviously no longer eligible for funded IVF. Would they try clomid or similar for someone with partially blocked tubes? I’m also now past 35 if that makes a difference.

Also - I hope my post isn’t offensive to anyone on here who is struggling with infertility. I know this can be a very hard time of year for anyone experiencing loss of any kind, and infertility is a loss in itself, and so hard because you can’t talk about it so openly.

I don't think they would offer you clomid unless you present with irregular cycles or anovulation, as that's what clomid helps with. It shouldn't be given out as a catch all (but sometimes is). It can have nasty side effects (in my case caused me to grow a medium-sized fibroid). So the nhs might not be able to offer you any treatment. Depending on area, you might be offered fertility testing, but not everywhere.

I'm very sorry for the loss of your child. Yes infertility is loss too, but it's the loss of something hypothetical. The loss of a child, flesh and bone, is cruel. Please make sure to be kind to yourself.

I'm so sorry to hear about your loss, @acquiescence. What a sad thing to go through and how brave of you to be so honest, now you are able to think about ttc again. Flowers

I just wanted to say that I have at least one partially blocked tube, which we know from my HSG test, with the other potentially being fully blocked. I have been referred for IVF (I qualify as no previous children) but was given Clomid in the meantime, so it is possible! That being said, I have PCOS too and as the PP said, it is understood to be of little use if you already ovulate.

X

Unfortunately clomid unlikely to be offered especially with blocked tubes - it's for people who have trouble ovulating. IVF sounds like your only option to be honest but privately funded x

I'm so sorry for your loss Thanks. I have a three year old and just can't imagine her being taken from us.

We've been trying for dc 2 for two years now and starting our first cycle of ivf in jan. I have pco and one blocked tube and was prescribed clomid despite ovulating. I was incredibly lucky in that I had my tube unblocked on the nhs, but 6 months later I'm still not pregnant, hence the ivf. I'm no doctor and I don't know you, but if I were you I'd get saving for the ivf and assume that is what you'll be doing. No harm in trying to get further tests or treatment on the nhs, but it's quite likely they'll tell you ivf is what you need.

Thanks all for your replies and kind words. It’s useful to know that clomid may not be a viable option. We are fortunate to have some savings for (some) IVF if needed. Maybe we won’t need it, but I have lost all faith in the world so I can’t imagine a natural pregnancy occurring again.

I really hope you are successful in your ongoing journeys before long.
