PCOS but no metformin

Hi

Has anyone else been diagnosed with PCOS but not given Metformin?

My consultant said I have a high LH to FSH ratio and saw polycystic ovaries during the scan, but didn't recommend any treatment.

My GP is saying I don't need medication as they think I am still ovulating.

I have PCOS, I have been on Metformin for 10 years. I ovulate.

It seems different treatment in different areas.

I do recommend taking folic acid, and myo-inositol.

Interesting to hear you take Metformin. If you don't mind me asking, do you have insulin resistance and elevated testosterone? That's what I'm being tested for at the mo.

Yes, I have raised testosterone and insulin resistance.

I had a scan and blood test. I'm not very cystic, which is good.

I have since had fertility investigations (privately) as I'm pushing 40 and haven't conceived. Good egg count and tubes ok! She upped my metformin form 500mg twice a day to three times - I was hoping the weight would fall off. - it hasn't. I'm right at the top of a healthy bmi.

That's really frustrating that they won't give you metformin. There is research to show that women with PCOS have double the miscarriage rate of women without it. On metformin, though, this reduces to the risk of a woman without PCOS. Could it be worth showing them that, in the hope they'll give it to you to try?

I'd recommend the book it starts with an egg too. There are different recommended protocols in there and a specific one for PCOS. I didn't get around to trying it, but went to the effort of sourcing everything.

I take 1500mg metformin a day, and I've felt so much better since I've been on it. I was so tired and had so much brain fog before. Been on it about 18 months now. Am worried they will try and get me off it and some point, but I'll fight tooth and nail to stay on it!

Who is the "they" you mention here?. The gynae you saw?

Why was no treatment actually recommended?. What has been suggested to you to do now?

Consultant and my GP both think I'm ovulating because of a progesterone test I had over a year ago. Consultant saw a large follicle on the scan and said that I was gearing up to ovulate.

The consultant didn't suggest any treatment but recommended IVF.

GP has sent me for the testosterone test and fasting blood glucose test.

I'm just getting myself informed as I've learnt I really need to push for things to happen!

@EnglishRain I'm glad you are feeling a lot better on the Metformin. Fingers crossed you can stay on it.

Yes, this is possible. Sometimes your doctor will also recommend natural treatments and diet changes as well.

Some studies have shown that metformin helps, other studies have shown that it doesn't really help much unless you are an older overweight mum. So that might be a reason not to prescribe it.
