Pregnant over 40..taking aspirin?

Hi, I had ivf last month and I’m currently 7w2d. I’ve seen consultant this week and was told to take 75mg of aspirin. I bought some but it says on a box don’t take if pregnant. Asked my go but she didn’t have a clue. Went back to consultant who said that they recommend this low dosage to everyone over 39...anyone else was told to take aspirin?I trust my consultant, she got me this far, just a bit worried to take anything..thanks.

I had to take this with my last BFP - checked with the pharmacist who said it was fine xx

eurochick · 13/12/2019 07:32

I was advised to take it after ivf by my consultant.

mummagirl · 13/12/2019 07:32

I did take this
I had 3 miscarriages before taking aspirin and credit it with allowing my last pregnancy to continue to term

I had ivf and had twins... was told to take it by consultant to lower risk of miscarriage and prem delivery.. was 32 at time! All was fine and got to 36w :) congratulations xx

www.nice.org.uk/guidance/ng133/chapter/recommendations Standard advice now for all at moderate risk of preeclampsia.

NotYourHun · 13/12/2019 08:51

Yes aspirin lowers your risk of pregnancy-eclampsia significantly and at a low dose is considered safe.

It says on everything not to take when pregnant. This is to cover the pharmaceutical companies if you take it off your own bat. Doctors have very detailed information on the safety of medications in pregnancy and will check before prescribing if they aren’t sure. So if a doctor tells you to take something and you follow the prescribed dose there is nothing to worry about.
Google thalidomide package to see how drugs really dangerous in pregnancy are packaged, you can’t miss it.

After numerous miscarriages the only difference with y successful pregnancy was taking aspirin which a specialist had recommended. I can’t guarantee that it was the reason the pregnancy was successful but it was the only thing I changed. I wish I had known about it years earlier and had avoided all the heartbreak. Especially as I am now a little old to do it again (mid 40s)

Frazzlerock · 13/12/2019 09:04

Our RMC consultant won't put me on aspirin until we see a heartbeat. Something about the baby needing sticky blood to begin with.

FWIW I took aspirin and progesterone from the moment I got my BFP in my last pregnancy and our baby still died, so I'm happy to wait this time.

MiaNG · 13/12/2019 09:04

Congratulations. I took 150mg of aspirin daily throughout my pregnancy which was relatively low risk (I was 24). My midwife said it was new guidelines in my case to prevent pre eclampsia due to a few risk factors.

Healthy pregnancy and baby is now 14 weeks.Smile

I’ve just had my second miscarriage following ivf and I am definitely wanting to try aspirin on my next attempt. I only have 1 embryo left and that will be it for us so wanna give it the best shot. Just hope my consultant agrees when I see him in January as I need to do something else to support these pregnancies 😪😪😪

Pilot12 · 13/12/2019 09:58

I took it from 12w to 38w as prescribed by my Consultant. It also says on the pack that you should stop taking it gradually and not just stop but my Consultant told me to just stop it all together and all was fine.

AliceAbsolum · 13/12/2019 19:16

What dosage?

charmers2501 · 13/12/2019 19:23

Myself and my sister both had multiple miscarriages. We both took aspirin for our last pregnancies and both had normal pregnancies. If I had the luck to get pregnant again I wouldn't hesitate to take it.

fool11 · 13/12/2019 19:47

My consultant said paediatric, low dosage of 75mg, they recommend especially for eclampsia , risks for older women pregnancies

Sorry to bump an old thread. I've been told I have low PAPP-A levels and need to start taking Aspirin now. I picked up some 75mg gastro resistant aspirin from Boots today. It also says not to take if pregnant which I understand is standard but in the leaflet it specifically says not to take in the last 3 months of pregnancy but I've been told to take until birth. I'm so confused whether to take this or check with the midwife first. Pharmacist said it's the correct ones but the labels are worrying me!

@fool11 Which one are you taking?

fool11 · 04/01/2020 18:38

Hi @RedRobin7, I’m taking the same one, Boots 75mg gastro resistant. I was also worried, my gp didn’t have a clue, midwifes I called didn’t know so I went back to my consultant and she confirmed it’s fine. Hope this helps.

@fool11 That's great, thank you. So annoying midwives and doctors don't know these things!

Blondeshavemorefun · 06/01/2020 14:22

Yes was advised to take baby aspirin

Go to doc and get a prescription

fool11 · 06/01/2020 15:08

Thank you @cg86, that’s very helpful and thanks @blondshavemorefun..didn’t know you can get on prescription ..my surgery is very bad..they just keep saying you can get over the counter for everything ..I know it’s not expensive (compare to ivf 😄) but with all other vitamins, extra scans, tests) which I have to pay for it does add up..
