IUI question...

Hi,
I'm due to start IUI next month (October), however, I usually take the the year 6 children at my school away on an activity week- this would be Monday to Friday. It's not too strenuous and I've done it many times before.
I'm just wondering peoples opinion of if I should go ahead with it or not? (The residential, I mean). The residential should fall around a week after I have the IUI procedure.
People who have had IUI- did you have to have the IUI procedure any later than anticipated? Were you advised against exercise?
Thanks! :)

If you're not running a marathon I think you'll be fine. Life doesn't stop for IUIs. How many cycles do you plan to do? I'm sure you'll ask your clinic for advice too. We're doing a 3 cycle package starting in the next couple months.

Thanks so much for your reply :). We're planning on doing three IUIs before possibly moving on to IVF. Yes I want to keep things as normal as possible now- I got so sick of not wanting to plan anything in case I was pregnant (before we knew there was something wrong). I've rang the clinic and had to leave a message- they're not really good at getting back quickly so I wanted some advice in the meantime.

Yeah my clinic is patchy about getting back to me. I was told before starting the IUIs I have to see the consultant (just to tell them in person we want the IUIs even though we said at our last appointment that's our plan) but they have no appointments for another 6 weeks. That would mean missing two periods. The worst part of all this is the waiting :-( Anyhow, hope you get an appointment soon x

I don't know if my experience is relevant as my IUI cycle was 100% hormone free, but my doctor gave me the following advice :

  • Avoid swimming (baths, swimming pool, etc) because of risk of infection
  • Do not drink too much coffee as it has an adverse effect on sperm (1-2 cups per day is fine)
  • Live normally (she even said that she wouldn't recommend no alcohol, as some people have alcohol before they find out they're pregnant. I played it safe and abstained anyway...)

My personal recommendation : avoid high stress situations. I had a work-related highly stressful couple of days, my period came 3-4 days early (obviously it didn't work...)

If you're comfortable doing this residential, and you don't think you'll be overly stressed out (maybe it'll even help take your mind off things !) and it's not overly physical, my best advice would be to go.

Must add, I had to take a plane right before and after the procedure, and I walked around a lot, and it still worked pretty well for me :)
I think reasonable physical activity isn't gonna hurt your chances, maybe even the opposite (if it makes you feel good and relaxed it would certainly help !)
Just avoid stress (I stressed about being stressed, which was a bit of a vicious circle XD but I still got a positive a couple of days ago)

They suggest not doing any activities around ovulation (starting 3-4 days prior) that make your pelvic area move too much or too rapidly, so no running, fast dancing, or anything alike. Walking is fine.

Hi, just an update- the clinic said it would be fine to go, although if my period was late I could be cutting it a bit fine with the timings. I did get my period today though (was due yesterday) so I should be ok to go. Luckily my headteacher was really nice about it and said if i need to drop out last min for any reason she has staff that could go as a replacement. I think it will take my mind of things as it's a really busy trip so hopefully that will stop me stressing out.
Thanks for all your advice :) I'm going to start taking the clomid tomorrow (days 2-6) then I'm doing hormone injections every other day, until I go for a scan on day 12.. fingers crossed!
