Ultrasound - what to expect?

Has anyone had an ultrasound for infertility? I am having an external and internal ultrasound on sunday and I feel sick with worry.
The GP thought I may have PCOS (irregular periods since 2017, acne, fatigue) etc but bloods came back normal. Has anyone experienced similar and gone on to conceive? If if isnt PCOS then why am I not falling pregnant? Everyone around me seems to be welcoming beautiful bundles into the world and whilst I am so happy for them, my heart hurts a little.

You need a diagnosis first and foremost. Have you now been referred to a subfertility unit?.

Irregular periods can often be an indicator of hormonal imbalances.

What hormone levels were looked at and on what cycle day?. If these were done on the wrong day in the cycle it can give a misleading result. I would not therefore put too much store by this at this stage because such should be repeated.

Well, I am having an ultrasound tomorrow, so I shall report back!

Don't worry about the scans at all the external scan is just like an ultrasound basically and the internal is just a prob, tad uncomfortable at times but over in mins. I have to wait till 13th aug for my results (nhs) they take pics of your tubes etc.

If there is anything wrong then you will be in the best place possible to know your next step.
There could be so many reasons why you aren't getting pregnant so its easily to speculate
But thats why we are all here and can support each other
Have you had a hycsoy or similar or has it been spoke about as that may be the next step in your journey
Let us know how you get on xx

Hi @MrsBee I've just had my scan and thought I would let you know it it went.

They started with an external scan- she detected a couple of tiny fibroids and decided that yes, she would do an internal.

They do use a slightly terrifying looking probe, but actually it was less invasive than say, a cervical smear and did not hurt AT ALL. Not even uncomfortable. She was able to look at the fibroids, tell me they weren't likely to affect anything at all.

Interestingly, she also told me which side I'd ovulated from this month (right!) and counted how many follicles I had on each ovary - all normal.

I feel relieved really, very glad I had it done and the whole thing, including a dash to the loo in the middle to empty my bladder before the internal, took about ten minutes including chat.

Try not to worry @MrsBee 😊

This ultrasound is just one of the first possible steps to working on a diagnosis.

I originally went for an ultrasound as I had suspected PCOS but “normal” hormones (when you don’t have a cycle, so they can’t do day 2 and 21 bloods I feel a bit like them calling it “normal” is a bit of a stretch!)

I agree with the others that the internal is nothing to worry about. I found it as comfortable as you could hope for lol!

One thing I will say is that at the start of my investigations I had one where the nurse said I only had two follicles doing anything between both my ovaries! I felt really upset and panicked all the way home thinking “omg are my ovaries just shut down!?!?”. I went private a few weeks later and my consultant reviewed the pics and said the nurse just hadn’t counted follicles under 10mm.
What I mean is, try not to read too much into anything you hear or are told by the ultrasound tech 👍👍👍

Good luck on your journey xxx
