Embryo transfer question

I've been reading through some instructions provided by UCLH/CRGH for my embryo transfer (hopefully due early next week), and was surprised they say to take a diclofenac suppository before ET and later same day. It's the first I'd heard of needing extra medication, as from what I'd read the ET sounded like one of the simpler procedures to go through. My DET was straight forward, with no discomfort, so wondering if I need this. Can't help but feel CRGH are particularly gung-ho with the drugs!

I plan to check with the professionals obviously, but did anyone else take medication for their ET day? Or any problems with pain or discomfort that day? Thanks in advance...

I had mine done under a general anaesthetic . 4 times.

Blondeshavemorefun · 15/05/2019 21:10

No medication ever for et - and has 5 in all

twinkledag · 15/05/2019 21:43

I've had 6 transfers and never had to take pain meds.

I was at CRGH too. I took the pre-ET one (mainly because my DET was horrendous and I nearly passed out twice). The actual ET was fine though and I didn't bother with the second one as I wasn't in any pain.

I've had 2 transfers and not found them at all painful. Slightly uncomfortable maybe because of the speculum and the full bladder, but definitely the easiest bit of IVF.

1 transfer here but no meds at all, I didn’t feel a thing having the transfer done and even asked ‘is that it?!’

Teddybear45 · 16/05/2019 16:54

They ask because most clinics will clamping of the neck of the m womb if your bladder isn’t full to ensure minimum contractions. And let me tell you that hurts - though for me it proved effective.

Thanks for feedback all. I heard back from a nurse and she said it was to smooth the uterine muscles and prevent cramping. Unsure if that's meant to help the procedure itself or post-procedure though. Either way she said it was up to me if I wanted to take it, so not absolutely essential.

Clamping the neck of the womb is a new one on me!

Hi, I hope you don't mind me jumping onto your thread as I have a question.

I'm also at CRGH and currently in the stims phase with egg collection potentially next week. Expecting a fresh transfer to take place.

I am baffled about how many days to take off work and when. Do you think it is best to take off from day 5 or 6?

I understand they want a 5 day blast but do they transfer on day 5 or 6? Could it be earlier?

I'm going to ask the nurses at my appointment tomorrow but any advice would be really appreciated!

Blondeshavemorefun · 16/05/2019 19:54

All clinics vary

Ideally 5 day blast but mine has done a 6dau

If embryos aren’t forming well they may say day 3

It’s hard to say when to take time off as potientwl ec day May not be the actual day if need more sticks for example

LennyFitz · 16/05/2019 21:50

As Blondes said there's no way to be exact with these things. There are 'likely' dates but things may change. My stimming went on a day longer than expected so already my EC has been a day later than expected, and found out after I may be at risk of OHSS so not even 100% I'm getting a fresh transfer this cycle.

You'll not have a choice really if days change, so can you tell your work you can't be concrete about dates? I'm contracting for work, and only been in my current one for a couple months so had no interest in giving them the full story, but I did say I had a medical procedure coming up that I wouldn't know the date for much in advance. This also explained my need to come in late for clinic visits in the run up. This has worked fine, but in all honesty I rather wish I'd just taken time off from the day before EC to transfer.

Thanks Blonde/Lenny!

Will just have to take off predicted days and then flex them around work. Over thinking it as usual but fingers crossed it will be fine!

All the best for your cycle!!!!
