PCOS diagnosis/infertility - external ultrasound?

Hello!!

I've recently been referred to fertility clinic due to TTC for 15 months with no joy. GP did 2 sets of bloods before referral and said I have PCOS due to the results of these, and long 40 - 50 day cycles, acne, and thinning hair.
First thing I have received is an appt for an ultrasound. I phoned to switch the date and I asked if it's an internal ultrasound and was told no, it's external and requires a full bladder. I was at work at the time and someone then interrupted me and I was unable to ask further.
Anyone I've seen having ultrasounds after preliminary PCOS diagnoses has said it was internal, so I'm not sure what's going on and whether this is to check my ovaries or not. Anyone had similar experience? I'm in Glasgow. Not sure if things are different across the country.

All the ultrasounds I’ve had for PCOS have been internal, but they still usually require/request a full bladder. I would go prepared for either if I’m honest!

Whilst I was having an external ultrasound for something else, my PCOS was commented on as the sonographer saw one ovary & then checked the other one too. Having PCOS wasn't a surprise as I had all of the symptoms; what was a surprise was quite how bad they were.

I’ve had both. Generally if you’re not obese an external ultrasound for PCOS can still pick things up cysts for diagnostic purposes. Internals are then be used to count follicles.

Thanks guys.

@Dinosauraddict I will defo go prepared for both then, and with full bladder. Was surprised no instructional info came with the appointment!

@peanutbutterismydownfall that's good to know it's definitely visible on the external. Can't have been nice to get that result, especially since you weren't there for that. I suspect I might be similar. I get lots of pains in my ovaries and can only imagine what's physically happening to cause them.

@Teddybear45 thanks, definitely just diagnostic at present. Good to have the reassurance it's the right thing.
