Possible silly question about ovulation

Is it possible to ovulate and not have a period afterwards? Or does a period always follow ovulation (except if pregnant obviously!)? I've been having ovulation twinges for a few months yet no period ever follows and not pregnant (I have a form of PCOS)...

I've not personally experienced that however I do know people who don't have periods (maybe just a little bit of spotting) but do ovulate and have gone on to get pregnant

I would say Id you're really concerned to pay to have a few follicle tracking scans and where they scan you during your fertile days to see that a follicle is growing and being released

Also are you using OPKs and are you seeing an obvious LH surge? X

Pinktruffle · 03/04/2019 10:22

As I understand it, LH surges as a prediction of ovulation is inaccurate for people with PCOS as they generally over produce LH

I have been using OPKs but not religiously as the only ones I've ever found to give accurate readings are the clearblue smiley face ones but they're so expensive so I can't keep using them Sad when I have ovulated in the past it has shown up but I am getting the same twinges month after month but no AF follows. It's a mystery.... Yes could pay for the scans if it comes to it, good idea x

Or maybe because of the PCOS my body keeps trying (hence the twinges) but hardly ever actually manages it

It is possible to have periods and not actually ovulate. It is also not true that ovulation follows on 14 days after the start of the last period,

Would stop using the OPKs in your particular circumstances because they are really not helping. OPKs are not recommended for women with PCOS because these kits detect LH levels. Many PCOSers produce an excess of this hormone so false positive results are common.

What do you mean by a form of PCOS?. Do you have polycystic ovaries?.

Fuzzyduck21 · 04/04/2019 22:29

The consultant I saw previously never gave it a name but likened it to PCOS. A scan at the time showed lots of big follicles but one doesn't mature enough to release an egg. I don't have cysts though so not sure why he likened it to PCOS but I believe my problems are hormonal.

Yes I've heard it's possible to have periods without ovulating but wasn't sure if it was possible to ovulate without having a period. I have also had ewcm most days for months but like I said I think I have dodgy hormones and my body is trying to ovulate but never gets there. Clomid was prescribed and was successful but wasn't sure what my body is trying to do now. At least it's trying!

(Should note Clomid was 4yrs ago!)

Follicles = cysts. They're the same thing. Sometimes the difference in nomenclature is because cysts aren't always considered 'functional', but the two terms are often used interchangeably.

Oh ok that's interesting thank you Smile
