Not Ovulating, irregular periods.

Hello!
(Apologies as I’m not sure if this should be in conception or infertility?) I was wondering if anyone else has been in the same boat as me. Through all my reading I have never quiet found a story the same.
We have been TTC for a long time, but more actively/seriously for 18 months. Since January I have been having regular tests/scans/bloods which have shown I am not ovulating, but everything else is fine. (Not including the hormone imbalance causing the lack of ovulation!) ...as well as that I have irregular periods. Varies from 30 days to currently in the high 70s!

I have my review appointment coming up where I was told I would be starting some treatment (clomid was mentioned)
Has anyone been in a similar position? What happened next for you?
Thanks for reading!

Hiya,

I haven't quite been in your position but just wanted to send some good luck! Hopefully you get some answers. You could ask your doctors to put you on clomid to see if you ovulate.

ChrisPrattsFace · 07/10/2018 22:42

Thank you!
I believe that’s what will be happening in my next appointment, was just hoping someone would come along who had been in a similar position! I like to hear the positive stories! Grin

Hi I have (am)in your position. I have pcos and have extremely irregular periods - longest gap circa 2 years. Anyway, we tried for 5 years and we're eventually referred to our local hospital. Had lots of tests, reconfirmed pcos, egg reserve, husband's sperm etc.

Due to age at the time we were recommended ovulation induction ((Clomid). This process established that I just dont ovulate without help (trigger injection) regardless of what the clear blue digital ovulation tests say. Out Of 3 rounds I became pregnant twice (when trigger shots were used) but had a late loss at 5 months and an ectopic earlier this year. We're now starting ivf. the Drs have said I've been exceptionally unlucky re losses so I don't regret trying the Clomid.

If you do have Clomid, the best advice I can give is take it just before you go to sleep as the side effects aren't nice.

Good luck

Twiglet2353 · 08/10/2018 19:51

Out of interest @findingmywaytoday we're your triggers shots on a set cycle day? Such as CD14 to ovulate CD15. Or were you monitored to establish when your follicles were mature enough before administering trigger shot?

findingmywaytoday · 08/10/2018 20:19

Hi @Twiglet2353, no they were not on set days. I had quite a few scans to monitor the thickness of my lining and the size of my follicles - from memory the follicle had to be 21mm. I'm afraid I can't recall the lining. Once they were satisfied re the measurements, and that I hadn't ovulated a nurse would give the shot.

The very first (and unsuccessful) round I didn't have the shot. The follicles were also a bit slow to grow. I read somewhere b complex and selenium might help along with drinking lots of water. The two subsequent rounds were successful conception wise. No idea if they had any impact though! Good luck.

findingmywaytoday · 08/10/2018 20:19

*follicle had to be at least 21mm

ChrisPrattsFace · 09/10/2018 08:16

Thank you so much for your reply, sounds very silly but I just wanted to hear someone else is in the same position!
They are adamant I don’t have PCOS, even though a lot of things point to it.
Thanks for the tip on clomid. Sorry for your losses after using it, but it’s pleasing to know that it does work. (Just read a lot of figures and statistics don’t you!)
Best of luck for your next stage!

Yes I was very similar to you. Pcos with very infrequent/possibly no ovulation & irregular periods with 100+ day cycles!

I conceived on the first round of Clomid - now almost 11 weeks pregnant. It didn't seem that Clomid had worked at first but I didn't ovulate until around cycle day day 40.

If your only issue is lack of ovulation, Clomid could save the day. Good luck :)

Nikki0891 · 09/10/2018 08:33

Hi, not entirely the same situation as you but similar. I had irregular periods and ovulation and had been TTC for nearly two years following two miscarriages. Had blood work carried out which all came back reasonably normal but before referral to fertility clinic came through, I fell pregnant naturally (due in December). Maybe it was having that pressure lifted a little or it was just time? My point is, our bodies work in funny ways and sometimes they just work how we wish. I know many people who have been on clomid and has worked wonders for them. Good luck!

ChrisPrattsFace · 09/10/2018 19:43

Oh tinyradish and Nikki, huge congratulations!

Thank you both! I know clomid isn’t the answer for all an-ovulation problems, but fingers crossed it works for me (if that’s the route they go down!)
Since we found out I’m not ovulation the stress has almost gone, but we’re very laid back people so it’s still been a largely positive experience!

Yes, this was me but with completely absent periods

At first I was told I had premature menopause but further testing by an endocrinologist revealed hypothalamic amenorrhoea

I conceived succrssfully on Clomid and after 2 miscsrriages I had 2 healthy pg's

Good luck !

ChrisPrattsFace · 09/10/2018 21:18

AnyFucker, that’s great to hear, about your successfuls. (still laugh at your name too)
I felt like no matter how much I searched I couldn’t find anything similar - guess I wasn’t quiet looking in the right place!

I’ve been told when on clomid I will need progesterone too? Is that normal/common or is that Me?

tinyradish · 09/10/2018 21:58

Thank you CPF - hopefully you'll be another Clomid success story. :)

You may need progesterone to bring on a bleed before taking Clomid, considering the long cycles. I think mine was 130+ days so instead of waiting for a period to then start Clomid, it was bought on by provera. Yiu take Clomid CD 2-6 usually so you need a fresh cycle. Hope that makes sense?

AnyFucker · 09/10/2018 22:31

Yes, a few days of progesterone was required for me to have a withdrawal bleed and to be able to start counting from an actual day 1

I didn't need it to sustain the pregnancy

ChrisPrattsFace · 10/10/2018 18:08

I thought so, this is my longest cycle so far - they seem to get longer each time!
Thanks guys, may just seem like a little but you’ve been a huge help!

Hi @ChrisPrattsFace I also had luck with Clomid. I was TTC for over 2 years, had all the tests. They said I wasn't ovulating properly. My periods were so irregular I often thought I was pregnant when it just hadn't turned up. My DH has no issues.
So they gave me Clomid. Did this for 3 months, each month going on a higher dose than before. 3rd month I was on the highest dose I could be. I conceived on that dose and I now have a beautiful toddler!

So yes give Clomid a go. I still don't know what causes my irregular periods. Apparently it's not PCOS although some of the symptoms are similar. Good luck!

ChrisPrattsFace · 11/10/2018 07:40

Oh that sounds so similar curlyrebel!
Did you have regular scans for monitoring clomid use each month?
They’ve briefly talked about it, hopefully next week they’ll go into more detail and I can stop asking you all the questions! Grin

OP posts:
curlyrebel · 11/10/2018 08:50

Yes I had to go in for a scan each month to check whether I was ovulating. I didn't have to take progesterone as well though. Yeh I'm sure they'll explain it all to you.
