Infertility

Over 40 and 2 failed IVF

Hi - this is my 1st ever thread so I'm a bit nervous. I turned 44 two days ano and have had 2 failed IVF treatments - the 1st in Dec. 2017 and the 2nd in Apr. 2018. Both attempts produced a decent number of eggs, sadly implantation failed on both tries. I was previously being treated at City Fertility (in London) but hubby and I feel we need to try elsewhere. Can anyone recommend another clinic, preferably in London (but we are also willing to try outside London) that we can try considering my age?

That's heartbreaking. Have you looked into the odds for your age, as I'm sure you're aware that the chances with your own eggs are quite slim given eggs decline in quality with age?

Less than 5% of your eggs will be chromosomal normal, and if is just a numbers' game.

Have you read 'it starts with the egg? There is only so much you can do to improve quality, but some of the things to try are outlined there.

Apologies if I'm preaching to the choir...

Thanks for your response physicskate. I knew going into it that the quality of my eggs was likely to be an issue. But the clinic was really impressed with the 1st treatment as we were able to retrieve 14 eggs and fertilised 11. The 2nd attempt wasn't as productive but we managed to collect 5, with 4 fertilised. I haven't read 'It starts with the egg' and know there isn't much that can be done to improve egg quality, but I will have a look. Thank you for suggesting it.

I'm so sorry - I had IVF to have my DD, but had a failed cycle first, so understand that awful feeling. When we were going through it, my understanding was that the ARGC was 'the' clinic to go to, particularly if you were a bit older. They are in London - Wimpole St. ( Beware though, they are eye-wateringly expensive). I also heard good things about the Lister, who are in Chelsea. Good luck, and don't give up hope.

Hi, in similar boat. Am 42 and in the dreaded 2ww at the moment. So with 15 fertilised embryos did many survived to day 3/5? You could do PGS to select for those with normal chromosomes..?

Thank you for your response. And I'm sorry you've also had a failed IVF. It's just heart wrenching! I've also heard good things about ARGC and how expensive it is. We can't afford it right now to be honest as we've already spent over £10K on the last 2 attempts. I've also heard good things about Lister and may do a bit more research into them. Thank you for the suggestions.

Hi YetAnotherThing, we had 7 survive until day 5 all at A and B grades. We transferred 2 and unfortunately we're told they didn't think the rest would survive the freezing and thawing process. We had 5 on the 2nd attempt, 4 fertilised and 3 transferred. Same story with the last egg, not strong enough to survive freezing etc. We've thought about PGS but it's so expensive. I'm keeping everything crossed for you x

When I did the research on HFEA site, CRGH came up best for women in your age bracket. My consultant advised me if money was limited then do donor egg.

Hi HappyHedgehog247, I've heard CRGH are quite good for over 40s. They are just super expensive. My last clinic did discuss donor eggs but also pointed out that as we are black British, donor eggs are scarce.

Thanks, Clearthinking. I'll look into it. I am a bit scared of going abroad though. I've also heard there are fantastic clings in Cyprus.
