Genetic embryo testing

We will be doing a 2nd round of IVF sometime in the next 6 months. I am hoping to get some advice on success with genetic testing. Seems to me that this is a no-brainer. Especially if spending 10K+ on IVF. Why put back an embyo that is likely to not implant or worse, cause miscarriage later on. Not to mention the cost! Any of you out there have success doing the testing?

My 1st round, I had two alleged top grade blasts go back but they didn't take. I suspect they are abnormal and my body rejected them. Since speaking to a couple of friends who had the testing, I discovered that half of their healthy looking embyos that made it to blast had chromosomal abnormalities. With the testing they were able to put back the normal blasts and both had successful live births (both 1st round I might add). Had they have not tested they ran the risk of putting back the abnormal ones, no doubt resulting in no success... Anyone have thoughts on this? I am not saying you're guaranteed success if you put back a healthy embyo but obvs you're going to increase the chances dramatically than just picking one that looks ok.

PGS requires embryos to reach 5 day blastocyst and be of a sufficient quality to survive testing, freezing and thawing.
Not everyone will be in this position from their ivf cycles.

Also do a search on mosaicism. PGS is not always a clear yes/no answer.

@HJ82
I've read somewhere that embryos possibly have the ability to 'self correct' any abnormalities when back in the womb and i hear so many stories of low grade embryos taking turning into healthy babies, but top grade ones not. I recently had ivf and unfortunately my embryos were of low grades, luckily one took and I'm now pregnant with a little girl. You just never know, and i always think you never know what happens to other people's eggs/embryos that don't have them scrutinised. I would have had pgd if it was available too but was not lucky enough to be in that situation. Good luck with round 2

@Itonlytakesone congratulations! I've pretty much stopped worrying about the whole thing. What will be will be as my mother always says 🙂 I'll talk to our clinic Nic about that option but if I only end up with a couple of embies then I don't think they'd do it.

@Botanica good point. And I only had 3 that made it to blast so I doubt they'd have done it.

I'm going to do PGS testing this time around as I have already been through two failed transfers and don't want to go through another one without knowing that I've put the absolutely best one back in. I know that there are flaws but my clinic have shown me their stats for with and without PGS and I would rather have a higher chance of success. Good luck x

@Summerloving17 exactly. If it's on offer and you have enough embryos then why not. Assuming your previous hauls have been fruitful and you had more than one make it to blast?

The cost when I looked into it was the same price as putting it in. I couldn't see the point at that stage. Might as well put it in and see if it worked, as test it and then either not bother, or pay again to put it in.

If I'd had 20 blasts from which to choose, I might have gone down the testing route. But I never had more than 2,and generally only 1 of any quality, so I just tried.
None worked as it happens. So potentially they were abnormal. But maybe they were fine and just didn't implant for another reason. Somehow this science just doesn't seem to be science!
