Urgent: Serum IVF / Hidden C test / Prolonged antibiotics

Hi ladies,

I'm hoping you can give me some help as I'm in a bit of a time sensitive position. We're choosing between ivf clinics in Greece and have narrowed the list down to two, one of which is the very popular Serum in Athens.

Our first call was with Sofia and it was rocky due to the language barrier but we decided to give it a second shot and arranged a call with Penny. We have a few concerns.

I have never known any other clinic to test menstrual blood to test for hidden Chlamydia and to be honest, I'm suspicious about it. I know Embryolab do a swab test to test for infection but they don't agree with testing menstrual blood. I also have had conflicting messages from Serum and patients of Serum - Peny told me you can get chlamydia (not the more common strain we all know about) from public pools and toilets but then other patients told me that's not possible. Which is it?

We are also unsure about the use of prolonged antibiotics for my husband and I.

We are patients of Jonathan Ramsay, arguably the best urologist in the country and most of Europe and he doesn't agree with prolonged antibiotics for my husband. I know taking antibiotics for a prolonged period can make you immune to them and cause issues later in life. Serum reassures us that there is no harm to the body taking it but we are unsure. I'm also unsure about having to take them myself, having had to take them myself for various illnesses throughout the years. I doubt my doctor will give me a prescription here in the UK for them - he would probably be shocked.

Did any of you ladies struggle with this? I know Serum is a great clinic so I'm not trying to be negative, just trying to understand the facts before we pursue one over the other. Surely I can't be the only one who had doubts about this or some concerns.

Thank you.

I have no experience with Serum at all, but your post definitely resonates with me. I've seen lots of people rave about them, but all the weird stuff they seem to insist on really puts me off because in all frankness it just sounds like epic bullshit.

Taking antibiotics doesn't make YOU immune to them, but if not taking correctly, it can make any bugs you carry immune to the antibiotic. Those immune bugs can then jump to someone else. This creates superbugs...

Yes, sorry, Physicskate, that's what I meant.

So does that mean there would be no problem with taking prolonged antibiotics?

Not necessarily... but probably not. Side effects could include things like an overgrowth of unaffected bugs - like thrush.

Look at the side effects for the particular antibiotic they want you to try. Doctors generally (but not always) know better than google in niche areas of medicine, like infertility...
