hysteroscopy and laparoscopy

Hi,
I finally have been given my date for my hysteroscopy and possibly laparoscopy.
Has anyone had this done recently with the NHS?
What will happen if I’m on my period? Can this still be done? The date they have given me is in September and I’m due my period the day before operation. I’m scared incase they will cancel it and I will have to wait even longer for this operation to be done. Been TTC for 3 1/2 years.

Hi, a few years back I had these procedures done and was given some meds to delay my cycle so my lining was nice and thin for the procedure. (Sorry, I've no recollection of what it was I actually took!) I suggest you book an appointment with your GP to see if that's an option. Do it now as you might need to take it for 1 or 2 cycles in advance of your September appointment. Good luck!

Aw thank you very much! I’ll do that first thing Monday morning. Thanks for the tip x

No worries! I hope it all works out. xx

They should have told you if it matters where in your cycle you are. Do you have a nurse / helpline you can phone to check? I had both of these a while ago and my cycle didn't matter though mine was for suspected endo rather than fertility investigation so that may make a difference. It might be worth phoning to check anyway as if you alter your cycle and lining with meds then depending on what they're looking for, that might give them a false picture iyswim? Good luck Flowers

No they’ve not asked at all about timings of my cycle, I’ve looked through all my paperwork and booklets and it doesn’t mention anything about it. That’s what made me think. I’ve already had to change my first appointment so I’m worried that if I have to change this one the waiting list will be even longer. But at the same time I don’t want any complications if they can’t do the op properly because of me bleeding. I’m just gona call them on Monday I think and just ask the question. Thanks for your help xx

I got a form I had to fill out to be put on the waiting list for the hycosy, I had to put down the duration of my period and when the last one started. Calling on Monday is a good idea, and as another poster said if you need to there is medication you can take to delay your period. good luck!

I realise a hysteroscopy and lap are different things though but would be good for you to get answers.

Kelly

First and foremost do you as a couple have a diagnosis or diagnoses of the underlying problems?. If not, why is this. I would be asking them some hard questions.

Why has a laparoscopy operation been mooted as a possibility?. What were the reasons given to you?. You should not have surgery without good reason and or cause.

What tests have been carried out on both of you within the last six months?. Any test result over six months should be discounted. When were you last seen by a fertility consultant?

Kellyw10 · 16/06/2018 17:47

Hi Attila,

So we have been with our consultant for about 1 year now. I’ve had a HSG year which had shown 1 blocked tube and server scarring on my uterus. They said they need to complete a hysterocopy to see what is going on up there. They say they may complete the laparoscopy if they needed to take away anything that they find instead of me going for further operations. They have said I cannot have IVF until they know what’s happening with my uterus. I last had contact with my doctor in May and will now all determine what will happen after this operation.
However nobody has mentioned if I am on my period I cannot have the operation. So that’s why I wanted to ask if anyone else has had any experiences of the same thing. They don’t open till Monday now which I will call them ask them over the phone but as I say I just wanted to know if anyone else was or is in the same boat as myself. Thank you.

Hi Kelly, I’ve had x2 hysteroscopies. They prefer to do them when you are not on your period as the bleeding will reduce what they can see. Depending on the operator, they may try it if you are towards the end of your period with lighter flow but not usually on the first few days with heavier flow. For my first hysteroscopy they struggled a bit as I was still bleeding a little. The second one, I was due AF on that date but was lucky and AF came early so was done and dusted by the time I had the procedure. They did say I could take norethisterone to delay my period but I’d OK this with your clinic first. Like others have said, I’d suggest talking to your clinic about timing tomorrow. X

Tigerlilly thank you so much for your comment! That has really helped. I will ring up tomorrow for sure and find out what’s happening :) xx

Just to let you know I rang the hospital this morning and they said they will still preform the operation whether I am on my period or not. Feel better now that’s cleared up! Now just to gear myself up for the actually operation now. Thanks everyone for your lovely comments and advice xx

Hi Kelly that’s great news, one less thing to worry about! Good luck. X

I had one a few months ago and the operation and recovery was fine. I was really nervous going for it but I needn't have been.

The one thing I did find really painful was the shoulder pain you can get afterwards. Look this up but basically the air they pump into you can cause you to get wind trapped that manifests itself in this weird shoulder pain. It can happen with CSections too but I never got this with my two CS. It was really painful and if I didn't know what is was I would have been worried. As it was it was uncomfortable for a few days and I had to take strange pain killers. Not everyone gets it though but just thought I would say something so you're aware.

I had mine for endometriosis and investigations not relating to fertility but I imagine it is the same procedure.
