Do I stand a chance of IVF with my low AMH?

I’m in the process of having a series of tests and I’ve just had a phone call today from my clinic saying that my AMH level is 2.
Although they are still willing to go ahead, I’m wondering what chances I realistically have. I should have asked the Dr on the phone but I was feeling really overwhelmed.
Any positive stories would be so gratefully received at the moment.

Hi @Summ3ers sorry to hear about your low AMH. It's a guide on how you might respond but not a certainty. It also helps them decide how much drug to give.

Other factors are age, antral follicle count and FSH.

The best marker of how you'll respond is being given the drugs though so I think it's always worth a try!

I have an AMH of 8 (I appreciate considerably higher than yours but I was told reduced ovarian reserve and given a high dose of drugs ) but I surprised them all and got 20 eggs on cycle 1, cycle 2 they reduced my dose down and still got 22. As I said it's just a guide and everyone varies - you really won't know until you try. One might just do the job!

Hi hoping. Thanks for your response. I guess I need that one good egg. Fingers tightly crossed.

Hi Summers,
I haven't got a success story for you yet, but I will say my AMH is also 2, I'm 38.

I have had 2 attempts this year, the first was long protocol and was abandoned before egg collection as the follicles weren't responding.

The 2nd attempt was short protocol, 4 eggs were retrieved and 2 embryos were transferred. Unfortunately I didn't get pregnant but I am having another go with my own eggs in the summer before possibly moving to donor eggs.

I guess what I'm saying, as someone with the same AMH, is that I still think there's enough of a chance to go through another cycle (which will be self-funded) before considering other options.

Other considerations are how old you are, any male issues (not sure if you have a male partner).
It really does only take one egg.
Good luck.

Hello I iam in the same boat but I am confused with the measurement.when you say 1 and 2 do you mean pmol or Ng?mine is 7pmol which is low, I am 35.

Hi @Summ3ers,

I have low AMH of 2.3, I’m 34 and retrieved 5 eggs on my first round with a standard drug dose. Im cycling again in July and there going to up me to 450 (😯). Our consultant is still positive about our chances. When I was going through my first round there were plenty of other posters with positive tales. This Lister link on low ovarian reserve is quite helpful too: ivf.org.uk/uploads/data/files/lister-fertility-clinic-low-ovarian-reserve.pdf T x

Thank you. The link was very interesting.
I’m 2 pmol and 42. When the clinic scanned me, I had 5 follicles which is below average for my age apparently.

Hi OP

Sorry to hear about your test result. I am pushing 39 now and when it was last tested at 37 mine was only 1.5. Pretty grim so god knows what it’s like now, I think I’d rather not know!

Anyway, we decided to give IVF a chance nonetheless after 2.5 years TTc number 2. I had conceived my DD age 35 (when presumably my AMH wouldn’t have been great either) naturally - first cycle TTC too. Little did I know what beginners luck that was.

So fast forward to today... I’ve gone with a clinic which specialise in treating women with low AMH and who offer natural and mild IVF. I did three collection cycles of mild IVF with the resulting embryos being frozen each time. The end result was 5 frozen embryos from the 3 cycles. I’m hoping to do my first (and hopefully last?) FET this month.

It’s been long, slow, expensive... and there have been plenty of unexpected pitfalls along the way. And who knows if it will work. It’s been psychologically pretty tough, I won’t lie, but for me I had to give it a try, so I know I won’t look back and regret not giving it our best shot.

It’s a very personal decision though. Good luck 💐

I have never had more than 5 follicles at baseline scan either. Still managed to get to egg collection each time. Have you been working on egg quality by taking ubiquonol?

Summ3ers · 22/05/2018 19:13

Hi Nancy. Thanks for your message. I’m really torn between UK clinics which specialise in helping women with low AMH or going abroad where it’s much cheaper. Currently with. London clinic.

Yes. I am taking that. I read about it in an amazing book which was all about how to improve egg quality.

My amh was 2.8 when I was 34. I was told we needed ivf. My follicle count was about 6 or 7 so pretty rubbish too.

I responded badly yes- I only got 2 eggs. However, one of them became a bfp anyway who is now almost 3 and a half.

The line about it only taking 1 is true. Egg quality matters the most.

Incidentally I got pregnant again (naturally) when the ivf baby was 9 months old, so natural conception isn’t impossible either.

Summ3ers · 23/05/2018 07:55

Thanks chattycat. My clinic said they’d focus on quality too rather than trying to focus on lots of eggs (which I’m guessing I wouldn’t be able to produce).
