Does anyone have any experience/history (good or bad!) of Ashermans or uterine scarring?

Hey!

Been TTC #2 for over two years now, and have recently finally had my first fertility clinic appointment. All our tests have come back normal, but due to my medical history (pelvic inflammatory disease in my teens, retroverted uterus, retained placenta and subsequent surgery to remove it after DS was born, and a missed miscarriage which also required evacuation procedure to remove) and current period characteristics (irregular, very light and short, nothing like what they were prior to DS) the consultant is fairly certain that I have uterine scarring.

Consultant is booking me in for a laparoscopy, hysteroscopy with dye, and removal of adhesions if they are simple to remove. Further surgeries will be planned if they are not.

Consultant has said that the chance of having a successful pregnancy is slim at the moment, as an embryo just can't implant or grow in amongst adhesions. A bit gutted to know that there is nothing they can do to help us get pregnant until this is sorted out.

Just wondering if anyone has any history or experience of Ashermans/uterine scarring, good or bad? I've had a search through the boards but there isn't a huge amount of recent posts about it?

If there are any others in the early stages of this diagnosis, hoping you will join me on the thread so we can share some support x

Hi there. I had suspected Asherman’s. I’d never heard of it before, it’s not something that is widely known about. I had a d&c back in April 2015, had the implant put in the same day. Had a bad infection (or what I believe was retained tissue due to the consistency/contraction-like pain). Periods were regular still but mostly brown spotting, assumed it was due to the implant. Had that removed in 2016 and switched to the pill. Periods were still regular but I was getting a lot of ovary pain so was sent to hospital to check for cysts etc. Whilst there a doctor said she thought she could see scar tissue on my ultrasound. Cue lots of googling/panicking. My periods were hit and miss. Half a day of dark red bleeding and 3-4 of brown spotting.

I had another US, showed no scar tissue. I’ve also had a 3D US alongside a SIS and hycosy which also showed no scarring. However I’d been pregnant twice very easily before my d&c (1 living daughter) and although my periods were lighter after giving birth which is common, I don’t remember there being mainly brown spotting.

Now we’ve been ttc for 19 months with no luck and I can’t help but think they’ve missed something although the technology/tests they used on me was high end and aside from having a lap or hysteroscopy, was also pretty accurate. But to go from getting pregnant whilst on the pill to having a d&c to then not being able to get pregnant at all, I find it very odd. Maybe it’s just coincidence.

Anyway, I’m rambling. I know a lot of women who have had AS and gone on to have one or more babies with fairly risk-free pregnancies. Generally speaking, you shouldn’t really ttc if you have scarring as it can affect implantation causing miscarriages but can also cause birth deformities, foetal death and can even cause the death of the mother due to placental issues during birth.

It’s scary to be told you could have AS whether you end up having it or not but if you’re under a doctor who knows what they’re doing, you’ll be fine. The success rate for normal pregnancies after treatment is about 60%. There are a few Facebook groups for Asherman’s. Lots of women still trying to be properly diagnosed, some in the stages of being treated and some who have been successfully treated. Good luck :)

I had a missed miscarriage last summer and a d&c in September for RPOC. wheb my periods eventually came back they were light. I had a scan with the consultant and he put me on a 8 month wait list to remove the scar tissue. This was in February/March. I am 5 weeks pregnant today. I'm going for a scan next Thursday and im pooping my pants a little bit. I really hope its stuck to a good place. The prognosis is good if you need surgery just make sure your surgeon is very experienced xx
