HSG - TTC same month?

I've been offered an HSG test however the doctor said to abstain from sex for the whole month.

I'm 40 so reluctant to skip a month of trying. Doctor also implied that she wouldn't bother with the test if she were me as she'd refer me to IVF regardless of the result.

However I'm hearing mixed things about this test. One being that it can actually increase the chances of conception for the next 3 months. Others are saying just no sex prior to the test. Have others had this test and did they try straight after or did they skip the whole month. Not sure what to do - time is of the essence :(

I think the advice I got was no ttc prior, because the hsg could whoosh an embryo from the Fallopian tubes, leading to an ectopic. I think afterwards is fine though. Mine was a few years ago though so I might be misremembering.

I had a HSG in December. We were told to book it for before I ovulated that month but no sex between AF and HSG but to try afterwards. We did and I got my BFP so I think it flushed out my tubes

When I had my HyCoSy (same as hsg except they use ultrasound not X-ray) I was told not to ttc for the month prior and was made to sign a form before the procedure to say that I’d adhered to this. Just to say also that it hasn’t helped me to conceive but it can increase chances if your problem was that your tubes were blocked by something that was able to be flushed out with the dye

We were also told it increases your chance of conceiving for two cycles afterwards, and I know someone who conceived immediately following it. I remember having a form where you had to confirm that you had had no sex in that cycle, but it said nothing about afterwards. Perhaps you can ask at the test?

Oh and you don’t say if the doctor is a GP or a consultant. If a GP I wouldn’t expect her to be completely up on all the details.

I had a hycosy and fell pregnant the same cycle- in our trust you have to schedule it between day 5 and 10, no sex after AF. I think it cleared out the tubes! Unfortunately that pregnancy ended in mc but fell pregnant the very next cycle (that one is now 2 and FINALLY asleep tonight!), after 2 years of no luck, so think there's something to be said for it.

I ended up having to abstain afterwards because they found a blockage and I was put on really strong antibiotics for two weeks. Otherwise my radiologist said she would've encouraged me to start trying asap 😂

Hi all. I had HyCoSy back in 2015 as part of NHS infertility checks which didn’t show any issues or change things in regards to treatment recommendations (advised DE IVF but, as already over 42, only able to go down private funded route as too old for NHS funded treatment).

Following failed DE cycle in Cyprus last October we have been asked to seek advise from rheumatologist as to whether to increase prednisolone I already take for RA and consultant has requested I have HSG as not done before.

Seen gynae in UK this week and been given forms and advise was to call radiology dept on CD1 to see if they’ve a slot during that cycle or not. Not been given any advise on abstaining from ttc in the meantime but, am guessing that, if I don’t get AF then I won’t reach CD1 and so won’t call them; and, if I get AF, then will be advised to abstain from ttc until after HSG.

Has anyone else been told they need antibiotics to cover for PID alongside the HSG? Consultant I saw said, if I’m not advised to take them when I get the appointment through to call the gynae secretary’s office and ask if I need them prescribing.

expatknitter · 31/03/2018 12:14

@Rememberallball I was told if they found any blockage I'd be put on antibiotics (which is what happened) as a "just in case" kind of thing because it might have been caused by an infection (PID, STI, etc) and that the hsg can push it farther up to cause more damage or something like that. It'll probably depend on your personal medical history and how the procedure goes. Fingers crossed you don't need them! x

Had my scan done on the 18th April but it was another HyCoSy as, apparently, at my hospital the do the HyCoSy then only proceed to HSG if they find a problem. It was a lot more painful than last time round and I bled for a few days afterwards but it was clear from their POV. Now waiting to see consultant again on the 16th to see if she suggests anything to do to improve our chances of the ivf working next time round.

My rheumatologist has said I can increase my steroid dose and also take the dose my clinic use for the 5 days before ET. I am seeing the nurse tomorrow to see if they can suggest anything else too.

Lastly, having spoken to my clinic, they are going to offer me different donors to last time in case that was the problem.
