Transfer with a full bladder

So I have my embryo transfer tomorrow. I'm aware that I need to have a full bladder for this. However, I have an acupuncture session before hand and then it takes an hour to drive to the hospital. I can't go this long! Do you think it would be ok instead to drink a litre of water on the journey to the hospital? Instead of not weeing all morning lol 😂 xxx

If you drink a lot 1h before the transfer, it should be perfect.

Is this your first transfer? Please don't make your bladder uncomfortably full. They will have someone using an ultrasound scan over the top of your tummy and they will be pushing down unbelievably hard on your tummy and bladder area! It's honestly the most uncomfortable part of the process and you'll be more worried about wetting yourself when they push down, trust me!

I would go to the loo at acupuncture & then sip out of a water bottle when you can on the way. Is someone driving you? It only takes around 30 mins for a drink to hit your bladder anyway.

Yes first transfer, worried now because my stomach is still tender from the retrieval and I have been super constipated which has made things worse xxx

A lucozade sport will help to stave off any potential OHSS. I wish you lots of luck!

Lucazade sport, thanks Hun xxx

OMG, of course Lucozade won't prevent OHSS... There are some serious meds that help prevent it but nothing is 100%. And definitely not a flipping sugary drink!

bigHill · 20/03/2018 19:09

I had severe OHSS in 2013 and the fertility clinic Drs plus the GPs surgery told me the next time I had egg retrieval to drink a sports drink that replaces electrolytes and is a glucose drink.

I never said it will stop getting OHSS but it is helpful in keeping it at bay.

Had two egg retrievals since then and always been told the same thing re glucose drinks too.

bigHill · 20/03/2018 19:11

Also, please show me in my previous post where I said it was 100% guaranteed to stop OHSS? Hmm

Sports drinks have electrolytes which is better than plain water. You need to be well hydrated to see out the hcg - that's what my clinic told me.

My clinic told me just to turn up at clinic - empty bladder then drink a large glass of water so bladder would be filling up when they saw me. Didn't use ultra sound scan either as doctor had already measured everything at egg collection. They did use something to clean my cervix though which dribbled our and made me feel like I was wetting myself!

Scottishgirl85 · 20/03/2018 20:50

I didn't fill bladder too much, you really need to be comfortable and relaxed during procedure and then you will likely lie for a while before standing up depending on your clinic (I lay for 30 min afterwards). I also didn't want to go to the toilet straight after standing up, I held for another few hours!

I hate the full bladder part more than any other part of the process. Happily my clinic don't expect me to lie down after - I'd argue the evidence with them if they did, bit too be honest they take one look at me and get the transfer done as fast as possible. I really, really don't tolerate having an even slightly full bladder. I get really over-dramatic about it, too.

bigHill · 20/03/2018 21:09

Mine does an Ultra sound scan as they can see the catheter release the embryos into the womb. We watched it on the screen too and you see a little flash of white when the air bubble containing the embryo is released

Blondeshavemorefun · 22/03/2018 17:54

yes wee at app then drive to clinic drinking water

they advise a full bladder but onone et (ive had 5) i was so desperate for a wee i went then drank again

i think a full bladder helps them finding the right spot

but yes having the ultra scan person pressing down on yourbladder is painful

isthismummy · 23/03/2018 07:51

I had to go for a half wee right before my FET as my bladder was so full I thought I might die. Then as soon as they were done I pretty much jumped off the table and ran straight to the toilet!

Definitely just sip water on journey to hospital. You can't go hours with a full bladder. You'll burst!

Best of luckFlowers

We haven’t commenced ivf yet but my coordinator has been very informative. She advised a moderately full bladder for a number of reasons. First one (and it was more of a long term thing rather than before ET) the more hydrated you are, the better receptivity of your lining thus better chance of successful implantation. Moving on to ET, she said that having a sufficient amount of water helps the embryologist to navigate to the best spot to implant, appparently higher success rates in the centre, also it allows a good angle and alignment of the uterus which makes implantation more successful
