AMH level, trying to understand what it means

I had a consultation which I really struggled with, my amh level is 9.50 which I understand is in the low range. Just trying to understand what this means in the context of overall fertility. Does it mean that my egg quality is low or that I will struggle to stay pregnant or both?

These are things I should have asked yesterday, but my head was in such a whirlwind. Grateful for any advice.

It means nothing about quality. It just means you should get on with trying to conceive sooner rather than later as your egg reserve might be a tad low.

The best gauge of egg quality is age.

Thank you for replying, that’s really helpful.

What I was led to believe is that it’s an overall indication of your egg reserves compared to your age, and the likelihood that it might then respond to the fertility drugs.

However, having said that, it does not mean the be all and end all. In context I have managed & complete regressed stage 4 melanoma & can’t stop my treatment to conceive but could to create embryos. I was told at the end of 2016 when we started IVF that at the age of 32 my AMH should have been between 15-20, mine was 2.1 having been damaged by treatments for 6 years. I was then told it was therefore unlikely that we would get many eggs despite stimulation drugs (average no of eggs is c10-15 for my age). We started stimulation drugs & stuff Easter 2017, got 3 eggs & 2 high quality embryos fertilised.

As I can’t carry a child my best friend stepped in as a surrogate & after the necessary 6 months on ice for surrogacy we transferred 1 embryo in Nov. She’s now 21 weeks pregnant with our child 😁

Last week my husband & did another round of embryo creation as my last chance of putting more embryos I am biologically related to in the freezer in case we can use them in the future. I was told in Jan 2018 my AMH is basically the same as last year, on Friday they collected 5 eggs this time! Tomorrow we will find out how many have fertilised.

So AMH is an indicator of fertility & clinics use it also as an indicator of how you might respond to the drugs, as a result I was put on the highesr dose of stimulation. However, mine was way lower than yours & we got eggs, good quality ones, & are now having a baby thanks to my wonderful friend, so don’t read too much into it, it’s just an indicator: I cried too much back then when I thought all was lost & it wasn’t x 😁

Thank you so much for sharing your story.

I must admit I feel generally heartbroken at the moment and clueless, this feels like a long and hard road. Your story has given me a little more hope. Congratulations on your pregnancy, what a wonderful friend. Hope the next few months fly by xx

Thank you, IVF & infertility is horrendous, emotionally hard & a rollercoaster. But by investigestigating your options it also means u are doing something, & something positive. Don’t lose sight of that. It’s tough, really tough because u might have many more appointments like that, we nicknamed my nurse consultant “the angel of death” cos she only ever told us to expect the worst but they have to do u can prepare yourself. But I are there because u might need help & science is there to help so I tried to go in with the attitude of “well at the minute I have no chance so what are you going to do to help me?”

And I found MN threads v helpful to understand!! Good luck with it 😁🤗❤️

Sorry I clearly can’t type!! 🙈🙈

Agree with Physics. It just means egg numbers are low (and Tbh yours really aren’t that low). Egg quality is what counts when getting pregnant.

My amh was 2.8 (so fairly terrible)when I was 34. I’ve bern pregnant 3 times and had 2 live births since then.

Thank you for the helpful replies and reassurance. Genuinely grateful.

My amh level is 3 and ivf with ICSI was advised I have started my first cycle now and the dr said he doesn’t expect a huge response maybe 5/6 eggs but he said you only need one good egg to do the job so I wouldn’t panic to much a level of 9 amh isn’t that low at all.

farfallarocks · 20/03/2018 22:10

I conceived naturally with an amh of less than 1. With ivf I had produced only 2 eggs on max stims at Argc. I was devastated by the results and we were told
Ivf had a slim chance of working but I followed all the suggestions in ‘it all starts with the egg’ and we got there. Good luck!

Your AMH isn't that bad at all certainly nothing to worry about.

I'm 32 and I've got an AMH of 11 and an FSH of 9.8. I panicked when I got the result and when I finally spoke to my consultant she said it had no bearing on whether or not you can conceive they just use it as an indicator for drug dosages if you have fertility treatment.

AMH has no bearing on whether or not you can conceive naturally and doesn't say anything about egg quality which is determined by age.
