Sperm test results

Hi,

DH and I have just started tests at the Lister ahead of maybe starting ivf. We have a dd who's nearly 3. It took us 3.5 years of 'unexplained infertility' plus an unsuccessful ivf cycle before we conceived her naturally. Since we started trying for #2 in Jan 16 I've fallen pregnant twice but lost both babies (one MMC and one tfmr).

We're having a multitude of tests done due to my previous losses and the tfmr before starting IVF.

DH had his sperm tested and it came back as normal. When they monitored it for 24 hours though 90% died within 24 hours. Consultant says that we can use icsi and can repeat the test to see if it was a one off. DH has said he thinks it's a one off as he's had his sperm tested on the NHS before and this wasn't picked up but I'm not sure they monitor for 24 hours like they've done this time. Does anyone know?

I know the only answer is to get another test done but I guess I'm hoping that this might provide an explanation for the difficulty we have conceiving. Does anyone know if the testing and monitoring of sperm on the NHS differs to what they do privately and therefore how likely it is that this might always of been a problem but just missed before?

Thanks

What’s the significance of 24h testing? Whether ICSI or IVF, the sperms combine with the egg a looot sooner. Within 4h of giving the sample, I think.

Just to add, I’ve never heard of this test before. Normally, it’s either a semen analysis or a DNA fragmentation test as well.

I think I'm more wondering whether this could be a reason why it's been difficult for us to fall pregnant naturally. I've always found the 'unexplained' diagnosis difficult to deal with.

Just to add they did all the normal testing around count, morphology and motility but then also monitored for an additional 24 hours to see what the survival rate was like

Oh, Sorry. That makes sense. However, given that you got as far as the conception part twice in less than 2 years, are they also investigating what happens after conception has taken place?

I've never heard of that test before but it's very interesting. You'd have to dtd within a very short space of time of ovulation, which may explain your problems conceiving. Agree isci would be a good solution. Good luck xx
