How are lining issues diagnosed?

I have light periods and wondering if I have a bad lining, as I've had a miscarriage and failed fresh transfer. Nothing was said during our stims or other scans.

Lining is observed in scans, e.g. whether it's triple layer and how thick it is. How far along were you when you miscarried? Was the cause identified?

Thanks JoJo, was only 5-6 weeks for miscarriage. The nurse told me lining was fine during scans for monitoring, didn't say anything about number of layers. But was on the pill for so many years and no period, since coming off periods are short (3 days) with a bit of black spotting 2-3 days afterwards. Couple of times had no proper bleed, just thick black sludge for a few days. We were told embryo was beautiful and would have no trouble sticking, maybe there is an underlying issue with my womb? Sad

Have you had a hysteroscopy?

meadowlark3 · 01/10/2017 10:42

No, would that be recommended? We are on the NHS so have not had any extras.

Hi Meadow. How are you doing?
This is something that I am going to ask about before my next round.
I had quite a thin lining of 6mm before transfer. The first doc said they prefer to see a lining of 8mm, but maybe my body couldn't get to that stage. Do you know what your's was?
I did have the triple layer lining, which the doctor seemed happy with.
I have very light periods too.
Xx

Ps: you will be put on tablets to thicken your lining for FET and they will do scans before the transfer to tell the thickness. For me, it didn't thicken... but I was told the thickness at the scan. Before fresh, I didn't know it was only 6mm ish xx

Thanks BeHere, I think it was around 8 or 9 and they said it looked great. I wonder if there is some other problem though that makes me have spotting at the end and such light period Confused xx

That might be to do with your progesterone levels then? I'm sure that when progesterone drops, that's when you spot/ period comes x

Behere, I think that most lining issues can be diagnosed by scan and are either caused by low oestrogen or lower blood flow to the uterus. Alternatively there might be adhesions which can only be seen with a hysteroscopy. I had one before my IVF (which failed to but I'm old so...), but we were not on the NHS and I'd had D&C with my last miscarriage.

I don't think light periods are of themselves a concern, but maybe you should chat this through with your doctor. My understanding is that generally high oestrogen levels lead to a good thick lining- perhaps ask your clinic what your levels were and how your lining looked? They should be able to give a view.

Thanks Polly. I will speak to the doctor. They left me on oestrogen tablets for an extra week, but nothing happened. So, they felt that it wasn't going to thicken more. X

So basically, your lining sounded fine but one embryo didn't take and you had one chemical. How old are you and how good were the embryos? It could be quite normal for 2 embryos not to work out without there not being anything wrong.

Also beware being told you have a beautiful embryo - unless it has been genetically screened you have no idea whether it could ever become a healthy baby.
