Hi Aussie. I'm a bit further along the TTC track than you, but from what I remember the GP asked a few questions (how long TTC, how regular are your periods, any previous children, medical history, general health, last smear) then he arranged day 1-3 and day 21 blood tests for me, an ultrasound (internal and external) for me as well and a sperm analysis for DH.
When we got all of the results back we had another appointment to go over them, then we were referred to a fertility clinic. I had another day 21 blood test before the appointment at the fertility clinic to make sure they had up to date results....our GP has been bloody amazing!

There's nothing to be nervous about, even the ultrasound was quick and simple (just a little uncomfortable).

Our GP was unhelpful so we changed GPs. The second one did some tests and referred us. It took months to even get a scan so we went private as we needed IVF anyway. I'm not sure how far the NHS will help you, but you won't be eligible for IVF as you've got a child already.

As you already have a child you probably won't be eligible for any fertility treatment. Your gp could still do some of the initial tests for you (bloods for you as previous poster explained and semen analysis for him). They might prescribe you clomid to give your ovulation a boost. If you need further treatment you'll need to go private. As you've been pregnant before, hopefully clomid might do the trick. Good luck.

I just wanted to correct the above post which gives well meaning, but incorrect advice.

Your GP is unlikely to prescribe clomid. Clomid is used for anovulatory infertility not to "give your ovulation a boost". If you're ovulating clomid won't help.

The chances of clomid "doing the trick" has nothing to do with whether you've been pregnant before either.

Clomid can have serious side effects e.g. Multiple pregnancy and OHSS so isn't something that's prescribed without good reason.

Additionally, as well as confirming you're not ovulating before prescribing clomid, you'd also need to have a HSG or similar to check for tubal patency first. Otherwise you run the risk of clomid causing an ectopic pregnancy.

Normally you also need monitoring scans while taking clomid to check follicle size and number as if you are an over responder you'd be advised not to TTC on it that month due to the risks of multiple pregnancy.

I'm afraid that suggesting your GP might just prescribe you clomid is frankly wrong and irresponsible advice.

The GP cannot prescribe Clomid but the gynecologist may prescribe you it if you have problems ovulating. The NHS have prescribed Clomid before for unexplained infertility in the mean time whilst waiting for IVF or other treatment. I was offered it but refused.
Each area has their own guidelines on what they can offer however. I would check what your area can offer.
