AMH 5 p/mol l at 38

Hi,

We had our first appointment at the fertility clinic last week. They did a count of follicles on the scan and I had 14 (7 on each ovary). My AMH has come back at 5. I'm 38. The googling I've done suggests this isn't a great result and describes it as 'low fertility'. I wondered if anyone had any knowledge around AMH and could help me understand what this might mean? Thanks in advance.

Hi, I think that's about average for age 38. AMH is used to determine your egg reserve and how well you might respond to stimulation for IVF. Having 14 follicles is quite good for age 38. I believe clinics often look at AMH together with FSH and other hormones to have a better judgment of your overall fertility and response to IVF.

It sounds like a great number of follicles. The AMH sound low and doesn't quite match the number of follicles... Do you know your Day FSH?

Thanks to you both for replying. I did have my fsh checked but it was done on day 7 of my cycle so possibly not of much use. It was 7.4. Clinic suggested I get it done again at the right point in my cycle. I know AMH is only measure but it doesn't feel like it correlates with the follicule count and I'm not sure why that would be the case.

Well, FSH would be lower earlier in the cycle. 7.4 is already very good so at D3 it will prolly be excellent :) I wonder what your consultant will make of it but it all sounds good to me :)

I'd say that's pretty good at 38. My amh was 2.8 at 34. I've been pregnant 3 times and had 2 live. births since (1 natural, 1 ivf).

However- my caveat is that all amh tells you is about numbers. Egg quality is what counts for getting pregnant, and that is determined by age.
