IVF soon-taking time off work?

Dear Ladies! I am due to start my very first IVFtreatment when my next period starts, it's a shame that I will need to wait until my next cycle as I am just about to start my period... Anyway I work in Special Needs school with challenging students and I wonder whether I should just carry on as normal when I start my treatment or whether I should take time off. What are your experiences? Obviously I want to do my best to make sure that everything goes well but heard mixed opinions about taking time off work.

Thank you for all your comments.

You should generally be ok. If it goes to plan, you might need time off to attend scans and blood tests (due to time management not medical reasons). You'll need a day or two off for egg collection and a day off for embryo transfer.

It only gets a lot more complicated if you develop OHSS. Even if it's only mild, you might still feel pretty awful and not fit for work.

Hi,

Can you tell me how long between your initial consultation and starting treatment? My first appointment is tomorrow and I dont want to get my hopes up that the treatment will start right away, and then have them tell me I have months to wait.

Than kyou

Hi DanNica!

I was actually shocked that my treatment will start as soon as I get my next period so cycle day 1! Unfortunately I started my period today and had my first appointment yesterday so could not start this cycle but could have if it was say 2 weeks ago. Anyway, there is no point in analysing that now I am very pleased that things move so quickly!very exciting times!I am in west sussex where are you?

All the best!

We have had a number of tests carried out so far - bloods, HSG and then most recently a laparoscopy where it was discovered that I have a unicornuate uterus (basically only one tube working). So this, combined with a low sperm count, meant that we were referred for IVF. Our first appointment at the fertility clinic was for more bloods and semen sample. So this is our initial consultation at the fertility clinic where we were told we would be given our schedule for treatment. I'm so nervous but I'm finnding it really difficult to get excited because I don't want to get my hopes up and then it fail! We are going to the Queen Elizabeth Fertility unit in Gateshead, Newcastle.
How are you feeling? Xx

Hi, I'm a teacher and I didn't take time off, just time for scan appointments etc. You'll need time off for procedures like egg retrieval when you get further along but only a day or two. I tried to carry on like normal as much as possible but just made sure I ate well and slept as much as possible. Good luck, hope it goes well!

I took egg collection and the day after off.

On my final round my lovely head teacher insisted that I took the two weeks from embryo transfer to test day.

Good luck.
