Ovarian cyst and not ovulating

We've been trying for a second baby for not far off three years now. I am obviously incredibly grateful that we have one DC, but would really like another.

We found out a couple of weeks ago that I've got a dermoid cyst on my right ovary, which I have been referred to a gynaecologist for. I sort off assumed that was the extent of the issues, but today have found out that it looks like I'm not ovulating, which is a big blow. So now my gynae referral will be to discuss these two things.

Does anyone have any experience of this? I'm feeling really emotional and confused and just want to speak to someone! Why am I still having regular periods if I'm not ovulating?! And could that be related to the cyst? If anyone has any experience of these things then I'd be really grateful if you could share your experiences Smile

Oh dear that's horrible to hear. Looks like some of my kinda story. I had been once a victim of ovarian cyst. It's painful , it's awful. Plus it prevents you from conceiving. At first u should know what ovarian cyst actually is.
What Is an Ovarian Cyst?

Ovarian cysts are common, especially with woman who still get their period. They’re solid or fluid-filled pockets in or on your ovary. Most of the time they’re painless and harmless. You might get one every month as part of your cycle and never know it. They usually go away on their own without treatment. Cysts are also common when you’r pregnant. When I had my ovarian cyst , I had the following symptoms :
1)Sudden, severe belly pain.
2)Pain with fever and throwing up.
3)Dizziness, weakness, feeling faint.
4)Fast breathing.
These signs could mean your cyst has caused the ovary to twist. Sounds dangerous doesn't it?
But well ther is nothing to worry about. There are a couple of treatments to remove them. Laparoscopy and laparotomy.

Laparoscopy:
Most cysts can be removed using laparoscopy. This is a type of keyhole surgery where small cuts are made in your tummy and gas is blown into the pelvis to allow the surgeon to access your ovaries.
A laparoscope (a small, tube-shaped microscope with a light on the end) is passed into your abdomen so the surgeon can see your internal organs. The surgeon then removes the cyst through the small cuts in your skin.
After the cyst has been removed, the cuts will be closed using dissolvable stitches.
A laparoscopy is preferred because it causes less pain and has a quicker recovery time. Most women are able to go home on the same day or the following day.

Laparotomy:
If your cyst is particularly large, or there's a chance it could be cancerous, a laparotomy may be recommended.
During a laparotomy, a single, larger cut is made in your tummy to give the surgeon better access to the cyst.
The whole cyst and ovary may be removed and sent to a laboratory to check whether it's cancerous. Stitches or staples will be used to close the incision.
They may sound huge enough but they aren't very. I went through laparotomy. It was short and concised. I think your doctor can best suggest which is a better treatment option for you.

@one2three4five I can see this was posted a while ago but i've just come across this. I'm going through the exact thing you described! i'm just so lost, and confused. would you be able to share with me if any of the issues were resolved? and if so how? It would give me so much hope to know that someone else out there went through the same thing. Thank you

@ds12

Hello! I am the OP, but I have a different username now Smile

I'm sorry to hear that you're having similar problems, it's really rubbish.

To be honest, I'm a little hazy on all of the details now, but I'll fill you in as best I can.

So I saw a gynaecologist, who said that the cyst wasn't large enough to need removing, but that the ovary wasn't working and wasn't releasing an egg as it should. So they referred me to the fertility clinic and I had a hycosy which is where they inject dye into your tubes to see if they are blocked and preventing the egg from travelling- mine were fine. I also had a camera in my uterus to see if that was okay, and was diagnosed with a uterine polyp, which they wanted to remove. So I was booked in to have the polyp removed, but when I went in for the procedure, it had disappeared on its own. So then I was referred back to the fertility clinic. The fertility clinic said that we had had a low chance of conceiving on our own, so suggested we be referred for IVF. As this was for a second baby, we declined because at that point we didn't have the money to pay for it.

Fast forward a year, and we decided to go for IVF abroad, so we actually went to the Czech Republic Smile The clinic were amazing, and requested my husband to have some additional tests in the UK before we went there, which determined that not only did I have problems, but that also there was no way his sperm was going to work, and that we would need ICSI. The clinic abroad also diagnosed PCOS, which had been mentioned by UK doctors, but never confirmed. Anyway, 9 months later, we welcomed a little girl, who turned one a couple of weeks ago Smile

I hope this is in some way helpful. I am a little fuzzy on the details now I'm afraid, but essentially, that's how it all went since I posted about it. If you have any further questions, I'll do my best to answer them!

Hi @ds12 I'm not sure if I can help you to be honest, but just wanted to say to you I am going through the exact same things. I have a 4cm cyst on my right ovary, first picked up in Feb and this last week I had another ultrasound with a private clinic and cyst is still there. I've had a blood test to check for cancer and that is all ok. However the private clinic are now recommending I go for an MRI - to determine the nature of the cyst. Dermoid or endometriosis. It covers my entire right ovary and they can't see or reach the follicles. Apparently it doesn't look like I've ovulated this month and my lining was very thin - 2.5mm on CD25, she's suspects my cyst is suppressing my hormones and oestrogen levels aren't rising. My thin lining means an egg will never implant. I was devastated as we've been TTC a long time now and using OPKs etc, but really our chances of natural conception is basically zero. Happy to update you as things progress. What exactly have you been told about yours? Not sure if this helps, but in my November scan, I had a large cyst on my left ovary, but by February it has completely disappeared! But the one on the right had turned up!! X

@bumblebee1987 thank you for the update. it must have been hard going to all those appointments and referrals but I'm so happy for you that you have a happy ending! congratulations on your daughter's Birthday!

@BewilderedBee thank you for reaching out, I am so sorry that you're going through all of this, I can only imagine how hard it must be!

I also went to a private clinic last week and they confirmed that I have dermoid cysts on both ovaries. I was advised that I should get the cysts on my right ovary removed with laparoscopic surgery.
I had a blood test taken and all my hormone levels seem to be fine.

My regular gynaecologist told me that I should get the cysts sorted out before she starts me on any test, medication or treatments to sort out my lack of ovulation.
I haven't had any tests yet to confirm that I am not ovulating but I'm just relying on the fact that after taking ovulation tests every day for 3 consecutive months, I never got a positive result.
I am currently waiting to see a private gynaecologist to get a second opinion about the surgery and to discuss if he thinks it may be worthwhile to first fully check my ovary function to see why I don't seem to be ovulating.
Please keep me updated, thinking of you,and hope it all ends well!

I had a dermoid cyst on my left ovary discovered in 2007 and removed in 2008. My cyst grew quite rapidly - it was 14cm when they removed it and contained hair, teeth and bone Blush

Unfortunately when they removed it they also had to take away the majority of my ovary.

We had male factor issues we knew about when we got together in 2006 but unfortunately this also added to our problems.

We had a miscarriage after ICSI in 2011 and a BFN after a cycle in 2013.

We have since moved on and have chosen to just be a couple.

Who knows how much the cyst really affected things...

Good luck to everyone else with the same issue.
