I'm sorry the results were not good. You will be advised to opt for ivf with those sperm results. There are ways to improve sperm results but can only go so far. My husband has an even lower count at

Hi thanks for the info. At least I have a little bit of hope! Is there also icsi that they would try? Not too sure about options as new to this xxx @Scottishgirl85

No problem. Yes they would go straight to icsi with your husband's numbers, they wouldn't bother with conventional ivf.
There is always hope, but you spend a lifetime trying. We were very lucky with our daughter, we are now trying for no.2 for last 2 years and have had 2 rounds of ivf. It is emotionally draining but physically ivf is fine. Good luck x

I think with those results ICSI would be advised. We have morphology issues and they wouldn't entertain anything other than ICSI.

It's not the end of the world, just a bump in the road.

We got pregnant naturally a number of times but due to MY ISSUES! we had multiple miscarriages so really it wasn't anything to do with MF issues.

Mc2017 · 16/08/2017 15:56

Does anyone know the success rates with icsi? I hope it doesn't take too long to get going it's such a unfair world!!

The results do sound very poor but luckily ICSI had been invented so the problem can be overcome.

I think success rates with ICSI are just as good as with regular IVF. We just ICSI'ed the other week and 85% of our eggs fertilised normally and we got a bunch of fab blastocysts in the freezer. Don't know your age, but eggs from young women are literally able to repair fragmented DNA from poor sperms.

One thing I would advice is to start on supplements ASAP. The best 2 are either Proxeed or Profertil (they both do one version for women and one for men). They really do work. In addition, no smoking, staying of the booze and a healthy diet. He should also cut back on cycling, lose weight if overweight, wear loose boxers, no hot baths etc. If he applies the above for 3+ months, there should be considerable improvement in sperm quality. You'll still need ICSI but you'll give the embryologists better stuff to work with.

And don't despair as there definitely is hope. If you fancy reading some ICSI diaries, have a look at Fertility Friends (a website).

ICSI for under 35s had a roughly 1 in 3 chance of working which is why NICE guidelines recommend 3 cycles, but not all ccgs fund that many. Each clinic has different success rates so if you get a choice look around first. I've done 2 rounds of ICSI and they haven't worked yet, but hoping for 3rd time lucky. It's not too bad...Good luck!

We went privately as weren't entitled to NHS funded where we live. We had 4 cycles over 5 years at 2 different clinics before we were successful.

Hi thanks for the positive answers! I am 27 and he is 34 so at least I'm still young.... ish!! Lol. I live in U.K. So I believe it's 3 attempts on NHS? Or could have changed. Not to sure! Never thought I would of had an issue like this but that's life I guess! Xxx

The number of attempts you get on the NHS is a bit of a lottery depending on where you live. Assuming you meet the NHS criteria for funding you could be offered anywhere between 1 and 3 attempts or 0 of you live in an area where the CCG has a blanket policy on not finding IVF. Only a few areas in the country offer 3 attempts on the NHS unfortunately.

Does anyone know the success rates with icsi?
They're about the same as with regular IVF. If you're 27, your chances are about as high as they could be as long as there aren't any other issues like premature menopause/low ovarian reserve or immune issues.

EarlGreyT · 16/08/2017 17:21

*not funding IVF.

Mc2017 · 16/08/2017 17:36

Thanks @EarlGreyT do you know where I can find information on where you live and how many you get? I know all will be revealed once I get appointment I just don't want to get my hopes up and then find out I can't!

Google is your friend here.

You need to find out what CCG you're in. This is based on who your GP practice is, not the hospital to which you've been referred. If you don't know your CCG then look up your GP surgery on the NHS choices website. On the front page of the information on your surgery at the bottom left there should be some grey writing saying which CCG has provided the information and that's the relevant one to look up.

If you then google your CCG name and IVF (policy) you should get the relevant information.

Hope this helps.

bluebird3 · 16/08/2017 23:21

This website will tell you how much you get if you meet the criteria once you've found out your ccg.

That's so lucky! And great age too. Do get your hubby on Proxeed or Profertil asap, though. Lots of veg and fruit, loose pants, no hot baths/saunas, no smoking and as little alcohol as possible for at least 2-3 months beforehand. That should make his sperms as good as poss. And do look after yourself too (although don't worry about hot baths or loose pants ;))
