My GP tested my FSH at day 16/17 in my cycle.
To see if I was menopausal / still fertile.
She said the test is not very reliable but it looks like I am still fertile.

The results are:
FSH value: 3.0

there are also a number of 'range' figures for FSH/LH/Oes at
follicular / midcycle / luteal but I dont know if it is helpful to type them in?

Hmm. I don't get this. Fsh is supposed to be tested day 1-5. I don't think it means anything to fans it tested any other time! Your gp had screwed up there in my opinion. Confused

To have....

Also - fsh only tells you How many eggs you have left, not if they are any good or not- which is what counts when ttc. So tbh I can't see how anyone can declare that you're fertile or otherwise on the basis of one fsh test. Sorry.

That's a bit random. You'd need the test at the start of the cycle. You could also test your AMH. Age comes into play too - even if your results are amazing but you're, say, in mid 40's, you're unlikely to be able to have a baby due to quality of eggs even if menopause is years away.

Agree. Egg quality is determined by age. And yes- fsh should be checked in the follicular stage.

tenpoletudor · 09/08/2017 22:10

So should I ask GP to retest at day 1-5 and ask for my AMH to be tested too?

Does that result tell me that I am not close to menopause?

Yes, FSH early on in the cycle and AMH (tested any time) will predict how far away from menopause you are. Although it's not 100% exact science as people vary. In terms of the quality of the eggs, the age is the best predictor and it doesn't matter if you're super healthy with a six pack and look 10 years younger - eggs age regardless.

That result doesn't tel you anything, it was tested at the wrong time. Fsh tested cd 1-5 tells you If u have low egg reserve or not. As stated above though/ it doesn't mean you can or can't get pregnant anyway if it's low as it says nothing about egg quality.

I'm also not sure if u can get the amh test on the NHS- you used to have to pay privately.

Are you ttc? How long? How old are you?

Ps- your gp sounds clueless/ they should really have known when to test fshHmm

Hi,

I recently had my fsh tested and it was done specifically to tell whether some of the symptoms i am experiencing were signs of early menopause. My GP said that for that purpose it doesn't have to be done during days 2-5. She did give me another blood test form and said if it came back high then I could go for another test day 2-5 the following month. When it didn't come back high she said there was no need. I've trusted my GP on this (I had mine tested on day 7 of my cycle). I think they can compare your result to what stage you're at in your cycle and determine from that comparison whether you're within normal range or not. That's what my reading on the subject suggests anyway.
