HSG- not sure what to expect

Hi all

My OH and I have been TTC for 1 year (I have endo, PCOS and bicornuate uterus) and unfortunately in our area you have to have been TTC for 2 years before NHS fertility help is offered. I have, however been referred for a HSG and got a call today to say they have had a cancellation tomorrow morning. I obviously took it but have no idea what to expect. Any advice/info would be hugely appreciated x

Hey tricky
It's quite like a smear test..they use a speculum to locate the cervix and inject contrast dye into it..turn on the x-ray to see does the dye reach the end of the fallopian tubes.

Some people experience period cramps when the dye reaches the end of the tubes. You might "leak" dye afterwards so bring a pad! It's clear and Colourless.

You should get the results there and then.

Is there anything worrying you?

Pretty much as geo said
Legs in stirrups, speculum in, and then a very thin tube threaded into your cervix which doesn't hurt but can be uncomfortable

I was able to watch the screen while they injected the dye in and saw it go through both tubes and they disapate into the abdominal cavity
They told me that what I had just seen meant there was no blockage, they took the speculum out and I was free to go

I think I had to take some antibiotics for a couple of days due to a tiny infection risk but other than that, everything was back to normal straight away

Thank you both. I am just feeling worried in general that a) they might find a blockage or b) they won't find anything. Sounds silly I know! I am also due to go to work afterwards and am a little worried that I might struggle if it's painful afterwards but if just crampy then I can cope with that! X

If they don't find anything, that's great
If they do find something, you've potentially got your answer and can think about next steps
Look on the bright side!

I've been for my first infertility appointment today and I am now waiting for a HSG. Hope it goes well tomorrow! Come back and let us know how it goes :)

Had the HSG- I don't believe in scare mongouring but mine ended up not being a pleasant experience. Mostly, it was just uncomfortable, but unfortunately my right tube is completely blocked and my left tube has some scarring also so they were applying a lot more pressure/using more dye than they would normally so it did become painful. I am now feeling pretty devastated and upset because i will have to go back and have a repeat of this procedure but it will be a selective HSG so they will only be checking the right tube, and then I will probably have to have surgery to unblock the tube which stresses me out because atm no one at work or in my family know that we have been TTC and I can't really hide a surgery from anyone. I'm now also worried that if we carry on TTC in the mean time I might end up with an ectopic pregnancy in my left tube because of the scarring. I'm just confused and very upset at the moment. Thank you all for your responses x

Sorry to hear you have had a bad day :(
I haven't told anyone about my fertility issues either and I think that is stressing me out as much as the prospect of having anything done.
I know it is hard but try and think of this as the next step. You now know what the problem is which means you now have a chance to have treatment for it. That probably sounds a bit lame but I like to try and be optimistic about things x

You don't need another HSG. You know there's a problem, so I would advise going for a laparoscopy, it's diagnostic and they can repair damage while they're there
