Anyone got / had uterine septum?

Hi lovelies

I found out today that I have a septum in my uterus which they think is what has caused my miscarriages. Has anyone else had experience of this? I've had a hysteroscopy today and now have to wait 4 months for the same procedure again but under GA so he can fiddle about a bit more.

TIA xxx

Yep! I think it caused the horrendous and unexplained bleeding in my first successful pregnancy with DS and then the many miscarriages that followed. I had the op at St Mary's, had a further MC but then conceived and kept my DD with none of the horrible bleeding I'd had in previous pregnancies. I think my DS was a bit of a miracle to have survived in hindsight. At the time the hospital were saying there's no proven link but that many of the women presenting at the recurrent miscarriage clinic had it. The op to remove it was fine, you then have a couple of coils put in while you recover - month or so later they whip them out and you're good to go! Good luck Smile

Hi amour

I have a uterine septum and am waiting for surgery on it. I have had 4 miscarriages. Number 3 was found to be due to a chromosomal problem but as testing on the 4th was normal my consultant has agreed to try the op. Fingers crossed it helps.

Is the consultant planning on trying to remove your septum?

I'm not sure yet. I'm on the waiting list for another hysteroscopy but under general. That's around a 4 month wait. Also waiting for an MRI scan. Think he will decide then what to do. xx

Hi amour, I had a uterine septum and have had two resections to remove it. I also had multiple miscarriages. I'm now pregnant with my sixth pregnancy and all is going well so far (9 weeks) so hopefully this will finally be the one. There is an excellent Yahoo group for women with Müllerian anomalies (septum is the most common), which I would definitely recommend joining.
Do you know how large your septum is? Has your doctor suggested that they do a resection of the septum during your second hysteroscopy? Please let me know if there's any information I can give you on the operation (very simple, but you need an experienced surgeon) or recommendations for my surgeons.
Good luck - it's excellent they've discovered your septum as now you can get help.

Hi laurelstar. Thanks for your reply 💕 I don't know how big it is. I'm currently waiting for an MRI scan (does this measure it?) I'm trying to find out whether he would remove it during the next hysteroscopy. Did your consultant do that? The consent form I signed last week just says 'hysteroscopy' but I would really like it doing altogether and surely it makes sense to them to do it all at once?! Did you have to have much time off work? Xxx

I've never heard of MRI being used to diagnose a septum. Mine was diagnosed and measured by internal ultrasound and then both re-sections were done by hysteroscopy. It definitely makes sense for your surgeon to do the resection when he does the diagnostic hysteroscopy. I would want to make sure that it is a procedure he has done before.
The op was really easy to recover from. It's a general anaesthetic but light. I had minimal bleeding a pain afterwards, a bit like a period cramp and was given morphine for the pain at first. Both times I went home that evening and only had to take the next day off work.
Most doctors fit a coil to make sure that the womb heals properly and doesn't stick to itself. After my first op the coil was removed after a month, after my second it was removed after about eight weeks - it depends on the surgeon's individual protocol. After that you're good to start trying again!
I'd really recommend joining the Yahoo private group as there are many people with similar stories on there.
Please let me know if I can give any more information. Good luck!

I had a septum removed day before yesterday through Serum Clinic in Athens. I had no idea I even had it, but turns out I had both that and extensive scarring. Surgeon removed it all in one go and I feel right as rain now.

Penny the clinic director said that septums leave you at much higher risk of miscarriage. I had one last month and 5 weeks and she felt that the septum and scarring probably prevented embryo implanting properly.

Good luck with your surgerySmile
