Secondary Infertility

I have 1 DS (almost 7) from a previous relationship and have been TTC no2 with my new partner for about 18 months.
After 12 months of no BFP we both visited the doctor, I had blood tests which showed low progesterone, my GP sent a referral to the fertility team and explained that they would complete tests but would be unable to fund IVF due to it being a second child which I already knew.
I have had a letter today from the hospital that says they will not fund any fertility assessment for secondary infertility Confused is this correct? (I know every Trust is different but I thought they'd at least do the tests, scans etc just not the IVF).
My second question is how do I get this done privately and how much roughly will it cost? We have money saved for this but no idea where to start.

That doesn't seem quite right to me although I believe different trusts have different rules. I'm in a similar position in that I have one DS (4yo) and am now struggling to conceive again. Having said that I have had 3 miscarriages too, 2 of which have been since we started ttc again almost 3 years ago. They have finally decided that I also have low progesterone and have referred me to the fertility clinic. So far we have been sent a questionnaire, I have had to have more bloods done at the drs and my DH is booked in to provide a semen sample. No-one as yet has mentioned any payment for these tests so I'm assuming that they are at least on the NHS.

A friend of mine, also suffering with secondary infertility has also had tests done on the NHS but as IVF is now necessary in order for them to conceive they are having to pay to go privately for that.

I'm really hoping IVF won't be necessary for us and that the low progesterone can be sorted to allow us to conceive and carry a baby through to term.

I really hope everything sorts out for you, sorry I haven't really been of any help!

My partner and I have been trying for #2 for 2 years this month, we were referred to an NHS fertility clinic in February. I have had bloods, ultrasounds and chlamydia tests on the NHS, next test due is hycosy. I have been told that this will be the last thing the NHS can offer, they were very clear from the outset with us that they could treat anything that was found to be medically wrong, but couldn't do more than that iykwim. I know all trusts are different but I'm surprised that you've been told that bloods are the only thing they'll offer. Perhaps double check?

Thank you both for your replies.
I knew it didn't sound quite right, I can't see my GP for 3 weeks to ask her but it's a letter they've sent to her and the surgery has forwarded a copy to me.
I know I can't have IVF or the likes on the NHS but I was counting on having the tests done with them and any IVF self funded if necessary. I thought the tests would be for PCOS, blocked tubes or similar and I just can't believe that they won't test for that because I've had a child 7 years ago?
I'm heartbroken and deflated Sad DP is absolutely furious and I don't know what to say to make it better.

That's really rough on you, I'm so sorry. We're going to have to go private I suspect, the hospital have suggested that we start researching private clinics, I gather that they'll repeat a number of the tests we've already had. Unfortunately not cheap... Where we are it's about £5000 per round, with clinics in London coming in nearer to £10k I've been told. We're dreading having to find that kind of money, but looks like it may be our only option.

AlletrixLeStrange · 06/07/2017 22:39

Found have the tests shown any cause for you?
I think I'll ask for the bloods to be repeated as my cycles were haywire when they did them initially but they've returned to normal after a few diet changes. They were fine for the first 14 months of TTC though so I'm probably clutching at straws there.
I've had a little look at hospitals near us and it's roughly £5000 here too which we do have but were saving for a better house for us. It's going to be a choice between a baby or a better home Sad

No, no cause yet for us. Next test is a hycosy to check for blockages, and after that we're on our own.

I can't be of much help to you. A sis of my friend, who was in the same boat, travelled to top IVF clinic in Gdansk or Warsaw (not sure). As she paid out of her pocket, and she needed PGS NGS (she was recommended, and told that it would work for her), she decided to undergo her treatment abroad cos of more affordable prices. She also did acupuncture before and during her treatment. Now she is during her 2ww.

Hi knud, thanks for the message. My hycosy isn't for a few weeks yet unfortunately, so we're just waiting. I have a sti test next week, I am sure I don't have any issues like that but the NHS have been very good and are trying to do all they can for us as far as possible. I will let you know how the hycosy goes, thanks. X
