Blocked left Fallopian tube-IVF?

Dear all, I have had HSG this week and apparently I have my left Fallopian tube blocked. My next visit with my consultant will be in July and I was wondering whether she will suggest IVF as the next step? or whether I can suggest that? I am 34 and do not want to waste more time. I am fed up as you can imagine. Anyone with similar situation?

I'm not in a similar situation but i have heard women can fall pregnant with one tube but does half your chance.
How long have you been trying? If you've been trying for 2 years with unexplained infertility they sjoils recommend you for IVF.
I'd push for IVF if i were you Smile

It will depend on other factors: how is your ovulation, how long have you been trying, how old is your partner, what is your partner's SA result, etc. A blocked tube causes only about a 20% decrease in fertility, but if you're already undergoing infertility investigations, it may make more sense to go straight to IVF, especially if other factors are contributing.

I had a blocked tube and because my DH and I were trying for 12 months and his SA was on the low side of normal, our consultant did put us straight to IVF.

After my HSG I was also diagnosed with a blocked left tube and a partially blocked right tube. The next steps was for the hospital to perform a laparoscopy which basically confirmed the tubal factor and I was then referred for NHS IVF as I met the criteria for my area. I recommend you check the criteria for your area in advance of any consultant appointments - it will include things like age/time you've been trying/bmi/if you or partner smoke/if partner already has children.
As PP said, you do still stand a good chance of falling pregnant naturally with the right tube as it isn't an automatic 50% reduction. Good luck to you.

Thank you all for your responses. It does feel good that I am not the only one going through all these treatments and nothing really happens towards getting pregnant. I do know that I am probably getting closer to some kind of outcome but it is so emotionally consuming. I am a very strong minded person and thought I had a really good attitude towards all these treatments but yesterday out of the blue I just started crying like mad! I felt better after but it was scary as it did cross my mind just for a second whether I will ever be able to get pregnant of not. This uncertainty is horrifying.

Anyway I am 34 this year, BMI 29-30, losing weight slowly, I'm following low carb diet as much as I can but I am not obsessed about it. Never has kids, DH no kids, semen ok, left tube blocked, the radiologist suggested selective salpingogram but there will be a risk of ectopic pregnancy and polips or whatever is blocking my left tube might regrow so I am wondering what's the point.

As suggested I will check criteria for IVF in my area and will strongly suggest that at my next appointment with my consultant.

I just do not want to wait and waste more time.

M

Completely understand how you feel - that's exactly how I felt - the uncertainty IS horrifying and hard for people to understand unless they have gone or are going through it.
Regarding the selected salpinogram, while I was on the waiting list for IVF I did actually fall pregnant naturally and it was ectopic-on my blocked left side! So I did have the left Fallopian tube removed. They offered to remove the right at the same time but I couldn't bear to completely remove my natural (albeit slim) chance. We don't know if the embryo managed to travel down the blocked left or partially blocked right and float over to the left. So it is worth discussing with your consultant some more about what's best for you.
I ended up having the IVF and created 5 embryos. The first didn't take so I went back for a frozen embryo transfer a few months later and I now have a DS who just turned 1. I am so so grateful I got my happy ending and I really hope you do too.

My fiancée had one side blocked so we went straight to IVF even though her dominant ovary was on the good side. The Dr said that in his experience people with one side blocked end up doing IVF in the end and we thought, why wait? It was easier for us to decide though as we were paying for insemination anyway and the relationship between the cost and success rate is pretty much the same.
Interestingly during the IVF, the blocked side didn't produce any oocyctes, so perhaps it isn't functional at all. As that means her ovarian reserve is then possibly half what it could be, we were glad we didn't wait.
If you ovulate more often on the closed side, it could more than halve your chances, but I don't know if they monitor your ovulation like that on the NHS?

Thank you all for your comments. I will definitely push for IVF, I do not want to wait and I do not want to unblock my left tube as this might not even be successful. I am seeing my consultant at the beginning of July so fingers crossed for IVF. To be honest I am not sure what else she can suggest. She was talking about Clomd but that was when she suspected PCOS and I do not have that so I am just curios about her next treatment idea;-)

Hi
I hope you don't mind me jumping on this thread.
I myself have just been for a hsg my right Fallopian tube is very blocked, I couldn't see the dye! It was also extremely painful.
The nurse said I can get pregnant with 1 Fallopian tube but I now need to have an internal scan and then see the fertility dr to see what he will offer us.
My bloods came back at no ovulation. I'm ever so confused and upset about this.

Filipinam · 07/07/2017 17:36

Hi

First of all do not give up! I have exactly the same history! except for my left tube being blocked;-) I have had my second appointment today with my Fertility Consultant after hsg, ultrasound and my hubby's sperm test. Finally I got the result I wanted which is referral for IVF!!! I think my age is the main factor and also I did not want to wait or try to unblock my left tube. How old are you? My ovaries and the womb are good.

I have a blocked right Fallopian tube, it took me 18 months to get pregnant the first time (but had a stillbirth) and I didn't actually know I had a blocked tube.

It took me 10 cycles to fall pregnant the second time (rainbow DS2) I had a laporoscopy to diagnose the blocked tube after 6 months of TTC as I was still under the gynaecologist from my stillbirth.

They say sometimes a HSG/laparoscopy can clear the remaining tube and make you more fertile - it is entirely feasible for you to fall pregnant naturally with one tube it'll just take longer.

Good luck Smile

I forgot to add we also got referred for IVF, went to our first appointment and found out we were pregnant again a week later

BumWad · 07/07/2017 17:44

Name change fail. Oh well Smile
