Sperm failed to penetrate?

Hi
Long time watcher on this sight, and after bad news today I decided to jump in with conversations!

I had first egg retrieval yesterday and it resulted in 15 eggs, 9 of which were mature. However, they failed to fertilise. The Embroyologist stated that the sperm looks as though it is failing to penetrate the egg even though my husbands sperm analysis was good (there was even sperm still swimming about this morning).

Has anyone else come across this and what does it mean next for us? A week until our appointment so going a little mad here!!

Thanks in advance. X

I'm so sorry to hear your cycle hasn't worked. They will advise icsi next time where the sperm is injected directly, which should overcome this issue. What is your cause of infertility? I actually thought icsi was becoming common practice now, for example with unexplained fertility they should do icsi.
Good luck x

Thank you-you have confirmed what I suspected (but it's nice to hear it from someone else right now!). I have unexplained infertility.

NHS suspected PCOS but the private clinic we signed up with (I'm too old for NHS in my area) in April has said unlikely. I'm 38 with a regular enough cycle so this development today could be the reason!

Our clinic have discussed ICSI but we all came to the conclusion that as OH sperm analysis was so good, we would just go straight ahead with IVF.

It may well be your single cause of infertility! Sperm can lack the enzymes required to penetrate the egg, but would still look normal under microscope so there was no way of knowing in advance. The fact you responded well and got good number of eggs suggests you've got a really good chance if icsi is used. Wishing you all the very best! xx

My cousin had this. They had to inject the sperm into egg and then place into her once developing. Their dd is 4 now. Good luck.

You might have what I do - zona pellucida antibodies. They bind to the zona so the sperms can't penetrate. It's a bit rubbish that you've only found out now rather than before you've gone with the cycle :( However, the good news is that it can be by-passed with ICSI. If you do ICSI, you shouldn't have any further problems because of it. Good luck!

SmileThank you for your comments. Feeling a lot calmer this evening. My brain is completely logical about it but my hormones are telling me otherwise-oh joy! OH and I almost have a sense of calm as at least we now have a possible 'reason'.

Appointment booked for a eek tomorrow so hopefully we'll get an answer.

Hi I know this is a old thread just wondering if you done another round of IVF with ICSI ? How was your outcome? I just received the news that none of my eggs fertilized this morning and icsi should of been used, as the sperm was good it just couldn't fertilized the egg
