2% morphology

Hello, DH and I have been trying for 9 months, currently on cycle 10. He's just had a semen analysis done and got morphology reading of just 2%. Everything else normal / good.

Does anyone know anything about morphology? Jury seems to be out online - I have been googling lots. Some people it doesn't matter, others say you will need IUI or IVF.

Any thoughts or insights welcome.

Banana yes 2% was the strict Kruger scale for us. His second SA his count was ridiculously high - over 300m but morphology just 1%. He is waiting to do his third SA - hopefully this week.

Closephine thanks for sharing - so you think tamoxifen made the difference? Do you think it's worth us asking about it at our initial appointment? Good luck with your transfer

Hi LondonJem, I just came across this thread as the question you asked is relevant to my current case. It'll be great to know what you guys did afterwards ? Did you end up conceiving naturally or went through ICSI root?

Keeptrying12 · 22/02/2021 10:10

Hi Everyone! wondering if anyone will know the answer to this...

My DH had his first seamen analysis done and it came back at 1%, he had his second last Thursday and the results came back Friday at 2%... The fertility doctor said when we get a re-test, if the results are still bad we will get the NHS funding for IVF....

Does anyone know if being 2% will allow us to qualify for funding? I should have asked this on the phone! Has anyone had 2% morphology and been referred for treatment?

Thank you!

Hey @Keeptrying12 Just had our first IVF ICSI round on the nhs as dp had between 1% and 2% morphology. We were told that average morphology is (something like) between 7% and 14% and that with our results it wasn't impossible that we would get pregnant naturally but it was unlikely to happen and could also never happen. NHS criteria vary wildly between CCGs, but we were pretty lucky that it was never a question if we would get funding or not and there was no time scale that we had to try naturally for (beyond the standard year). Hopefully it will be the same for you.

@Folklore9074 Thank you very much for this, really appreciate you sharing your experience. I'm hoping mine will be the same as yours... The doctor did say that if the results were still poor after the second time, that we qualify and can have the treatment as it has been beyond the year.. Fingers crossed. I think 2% still classes as poor so maybe the door will be opened for us. We will be being referred to the CARE clinic in Woking which I've heard very good things about. Hope your journey is successful! Wishing you the best of luck

Hi did you get pregnant naturally in the end?

ChefWifeLife · 21/08/2022 18:29

@Ghjuu yep with both boys. One took 10 months the other just over a year. Ovusense really helped in the end.

Ghjuu · 21/08/2022 22:29

@ChefWifeLife thank you so much your reply and thank you for giving me hope that a natural pregnancy can occur. I’m just looking into ovusense, I use clearblue ovulation kits. Is ovusense a lot more better?
I look fwd to your reply :)

ChefWifeLife · 22/08/2022 05:58

Hey @Ghjuu you're welcome. So I ovulate later than the “normal” and then have a short LP. Ovusense made a huge difference for me. I would have missed ovulation completely when I conceived my youngest (now nearly 2!)

@LondonJem Hello! Facing a similar situation as you. Husband also has 2% morphology - I just wondered what happened in the end? Thank you

Hello 👋🏼 very fortunate to update that we were eventually successful. We went through three failed, fresh IVF cycles then finally had our son via ICSI in 2019.

We went to start IVF again for a sibling a few years later and discovered I have endometriosis. I had surgery to remove it, then went through a failed IVF cycle. Two months later I discovered I was pregnant and we now have our darling DD.

Looking back I don’t think the morphology was the reason for our infertility. I read around a LOT and it seemed to be normal for morphology to be low and for it to fluctuate. For us I believe it had been undiagnosed endometriosis all along, which had led to poor egg quality for me.

Where are you up to with it all? It’s a tough road and I wish you all the best xx
