Do I need HSG and Hysteroscopy

My first IVF treatment has recently failed and I am looking at further tests before starting the second. I haven't had a HSG or a hysteroscopy before as I was told by my first consultant that I wouldn't need it due to no previous operations, pregnancies etc but I now want to put my mind at rest that everything is ok in there. I will be funding them myself and my question is do I really need both of them or is a hysteroscopy superior to a HSG and would it be ok to just go for this one to have a good look inside and check if there are any problems? Can the hysteroscopy also look at the tubes and is there any benefit to having a HSG as well?

Personally I would start with an HSG - much less invasive and much much cheaper. HSG will give you an good idea if there are any issues with tube patency or adhesions. Are you with a private clinic? They should be able to advise you. If your IVF was on the NHS I'm surprised they didn't do an HSG as part of the standard tests. It was the first thing I had along with an internal scan.

I later had a missed miscarriage followed by two ERPCS so then had both a 3D SIS scan (which is a bit like an HSG but they use saline rather than dye). That showed up something and my clinic recommended a hysteroscopy. I decided to get a second opinion from a specialist who wanted me to have another HSG before he even considered a hysteroscopy. The second HSG showed up some scar tissue so a hysteroscopy was then indicated but I then fell pregnant before I could have it.

I had hysteroscopy under x ray guidance (so effectively simultaneous hsg and hysteroscopy)

All done under GA too, so no pain either...I saw Adrian Lower for this, def recommend him.
