Hi

I've been trying for dc2 for 16 months. I went to gp in January and she told me to come back for two separate blood tests at certain days in my cycle to check if I'm ovulating. At the same time dh had a sperm count. All that came back fine so she's referred me to the hospital infertility clinic and my appointment is at the end of this month. Not sure what happens next. I turn 40 at the end of the year and gp said they won't help after this.

So basically dh and I have the same gp surgery but they wanted to see us separately. He hasn't been referred anywhere else. And I just saw my regular GP.

Hi OP unless you're going private the first appointment is always with your GP who will get you sorted with blood tests which you have to do on certain days of your cycle. Your DH will have to get a sperm analysis done, but again the GP should be able to refer him to a clinic - assuming that's all ok then that's pretty much it for him!

Your GP should then refer you to a fertility clinic where you'll see a consultant who will look over your history and probably order more tests eg scans, HSG (where they insert a dye to check your tubes) etc.

Then depending on the results of those tests you'll get a course of action.

I started off with the NHS but went private after all the tests as I had a 7 month wait for the 2nd consultation to discuss the test results - was 38 and didn't feel I had the time to wait.

Your GP will probably want to do Blood tests to check your hormone levels, which are done at specific days of your cycle (day 3 and 21 post ovulation).

So if you don't already, start tracking your cycles because it's the first question they will ask. If you know your average cycle, you'll know when you're likely to have ovulated and can time the tests accurately.

I wasted several blood tests by getting them on the wrong day. I now use An app called Fertility Friend to record my cycle dates and it's helped enormously.

cheesymonster can i ask how many weeks were there between gp appointment and fertility clinic appointment?

Also, because you already have a DS you may find you have to push a little harder.

I have a DS too and on the NHS we had the 21 day blood test, sperm analysis and an ultrasound to check on preexisting PCOS. everything came back as fine and they basically said that they were unable to take it any further. A friend in a different area also with a DS was able to get the dye test, but I was refused.

Hi I've just posted on a different thread but this one may be more appropriate. Tttc since dec13 and had a mc after four cycles at 10 weeks in june14. It's been 11 cycles since with no luck. Because I have conceived previously will the gp treat me any differently with regards to gettings tests (will I have to wait longer?). Do the 3 and 21 days bloods have to be on those days or day's close to them, as with my 28 days cycles, day 3 and 21 are Sunday's. Thanks x

Hi MyBlackCat so sorry to hear about your mc.

Re blood tests my GP said they should be done anytime between days 2-5, and then around day 21 as my cycle was around 23-28 days. I think if your cycle is shorter or longer it may be different maybe?
