Hi,

I'll try to keep this brief but a bit of background. I'm 32 and have had various gynae issues since I was a teenager. I have PCOS (had a burst cyst too in late teens), endometrosis (had an op to remove a load in early 20s), also had a thinning cervix and had to have that repaired early 20s. It's never really bothered me as I'm not massively maternal and partners have never been that bothered either. However recently my periods look to be stopping, they are getting further apart and are erm... less productive (my weight could equally be a factor here, I'm a bit overweight (I am trying to get this undercontrol) and this seems to exaserbate any issues I have.

I'm now in a stable realtionship and in a position where we could have children if we wanted to but we'd like to put it off a few years if that's an option.

What's the best way to go about having my fertility assessed? I can afford to go private if that's best but what will they be able to tell me and does anyone have any experience of the NHS for this sort of thing, is there a benefit to going private. I really just need to be pointed to a place to start.

Thanks in advance.

Hi
Best thing to do is go straight to a fertility clinic so they can do the tests on both of you
You will need two scans , one during your period and another one when you are due to ovulate, this will tell them how may follicles you have and whether the lining of your womb is the right thickness
Then you need a blood test to see your hormone levels are as they should be.
Your partner will need sperm and blood test

You may need to be already trying for a baby for 12 months before these tests are available to you on the NHS. Be prepared to go Private for a fertility assessment.

Your GP should be the first port of call as they need to refer you to the clinic. You may be referred to gynae to check your endometriosis and PCOS out and you can ask about your ability to get pregnant there. But really you need fertility bloods as well as the scans to check if you ovulate and your LH and FSH levels which the GP or private consultant can deal with.
