Sharps disposal when buying own meds
Blackandwhitecat3 · 05/03/2015 20:01
Hi there
I've just booked in for my first IVF cycle. I was thinking of buying my drugs separately as I've heard it's cheaper, the clinic told me that the company they use includes sharps disposal in the price of the drugs.
How do you get rid of sharps otherwise? And who do you buy your drugs from?
Thanks

You can buy a sharps bin and take it to a needle exchange

Certain pharmacies do sharps disposal but you would need to have put them in a sharps disposal box or bin first. Does this already come with your meds, or perhaps you could get one from a disposing pharmacy?

Don't know about drugs, but you can get a sharps box either by asking at the blood room of your local hospital, or by ringing your local council and asking for one - they have a sharps team who do drop off of empty containers and pick up of full ones on specific days. They don't charge.

Pharmacies sell sharps bins, they are only about £3, so don't bother going for a prescription one. Usually you can just hand the full bin into the pharmacy when you are done.

Hello - If you are buying your own sharps box go for a much bigger box than you think you will need ! If you end up using any pre-filled syringes then they fill up much quicker than you would expect.
Good luck OP.

My clinic gave me a sharps box (and needles) even though I didn't get my drugs from them. One of the staff was a bit shirty with me, on my second cycle, and said they should have charged me for needles, but they never did.

Definitely ask your clinic - we are currently self-funding but my clinic have given me all my needles and a sharps bin for free. When you're comparing prices for where to buy your drugs try Sainsburys and Asda if local to you as well as your high street pharmacies, they can be cheaper.
