Secondary Infertility, what now? (Lancashire)

DH and I have been ttc number 2 for over a year now. Our DS (4) was conceived easily so this has definitely thrown us. We're in our early thirties and in good health and over the last few months have been trying to adapt our lifestyle inc less alcohol, caffeine, healthier food etc.

I have made an appointment with the GP to discuss where we go from here but I'm terrified of being turned away as we already have one child.

I'm beyond thankful for my son but my heart aches for one more child and to give him a sibling. DH feels the same way.

So I'm hoping to see what help might be available for us on the NHS? Private is not an option, we just couldn't afford it. I have my suspicions that my emcs might have left scarring or caused damage. I just don't get why we haven't managed to conceive once in all this time when we've been doing everything we can.

If anyone has any experience of secondary infertility on the NHS, or in Lancashire, and what I might need to ask at my GP appointment I would be really grateful. Thank you.

There is a little group of us on the secondary infertility thread with the exact same problem. Come and join us! There are some v knowledgable people on there.

I'm in London so don't know what your health authority would let you do, however here my gp has been very sympathetic and I've had all sorts of tests on the nhs including a lap and dye under general anaesthetic.

We are not eligible for ivf or iui on the nhs because we already have a little girl, and for that reason are about to start treatment at a private clinic.

It has taken about 6 months from talking to my gp to getting all the investigative tests done. I think we may have been able to get clomid on the nhs too but quite frankly I am bored of waiting for an appointment with the specialist fertility unit at our local hospital and I'm a bit older so want to crack on.

Best of luck!

Thank you tomato

We've been 'actively' trying since July last year but hadn't used contraception for a few months prior to that taking our total time to over a year now. I'm hoping the GP won't send me away.

I'm glad to hear you got that initial testing on the NHS as that's what I'm hoping for. I just want to get the process started as I know this can be a long road.

I'm come and check out that thread, thanks. Best of luck to you too.

I'm in the north west. I went to my GP after a year of trying. She sent me for bloods, ultrasound and HSG (which revealed one blocked tube).

That was a year ago so after saving as hard as possible, we've almost scraped together £5k for a private referral to Liverpool Womens.

Thank you three. I guess we had better try to start saving now, alongside any testing via the NHS.

I'd be interested to hear how you get on at Liverpool as that isn't too far from me. Best of luck to you.
