Diet after laparoscopic surgery

I've got my laparoscopy today! (Leaving in half an hour). It's for endo, I was just wondering what everyone's diet was like after. How quickly did you eat again? Was it because you were told to or did you have an appetite, what was it you ate? Thanks in advance!

Hi Christinedonna, I had a lap in August (fibroids) and I think that first day the anaesthetic really wiped my appetite. I did eat a sandwich when I was in the ward, though. I was mostly just thirsty.

How did it go?

CatnipMouse · 02/02/2015 12:43

I had a revoltingly dry mouth and nausea for about 24 hours. I don't think I get on well with general anesthesia. I wish I'd taken some chewing gum for afterwards. They made me eat something before I could be discharged, eventually it stayed down long enough for them to let me home later that same evening. Once I was home I think I just ate fairly bland and boring food for a day or so, just little bits of it, that was all I wanted.

I hope things went well for you today and you recover well.

Thanks ladies that helps. I'm still waiting around to go down, been told to get into my gown and stockings (so attractive) for about 3:15 and expect to be taken down at half past

I had a lap last week and was home in time for lunch - just had a bit of soup. Have eaten normally since then with a bit more chocolate than normal.

Just to warn you I felt tender and very bloated for a few days so took things easily. Tenderness has now gone but still a bit bloated (which may just be the chocolate).

Good luck - hope it all gets sorted for you.

Just got home from the hospital. Woke up and had a bit of a cry (not really sure why) still feel a bit teary for some reason. Had a few doses of morphine as I was quite uncomfortable. I had a sandwich brought to me and had the tiniest bite and had to have a mouthful of water to even be able to swallow it as my throat was so dry. I couldn't manage anymore than that as I felt extremely sick, they brought me lemonade to help but I couldn't manage more than a sip as I felt sick. Rested my eyes for a while, have no concept of time so I have no idea how long it was. They considered keeping me in as I couldn't stand up due to lightheadedness but I just wanted to be at home in bed and the nurse agreed. Had to be wheeled out as I felt like I was going to faint. They said "everything looks completely normal, your ovaries look good and your tubes are clear" which is very bitter sweet as I'm still left without answers. Although right now keeping my eyes open is enough of a struggle as it is so one thing at a time! Get myself better and then back to the doctors for the next steps. Thank you for the help everyone

Christinedonna - I had the same thing in October 2013, but they cleared the endo at the same time and said that my tubes are clear and ovaries looking normal.

I had an awful reaction to the anaesthetic - never happened before and I've had quite a few, couldn't stop shaking and was freezing cold - they had to put me in a bubble wrap bag and inflate it with hot air to try and get my temp back up.

Post surgery the incision in the belly button kept bleeding so ended up being in overnight and didn't get a wink of sleep!

I think you are entirely justified in having a cry xx

I always hoped I would then conceive naturally but unfortunately for unknown reasons it hasn't happened. I now have treatment planning for IVF this afternoon :-)

Look after yourself the next two weeks as you are likely to feel sore - lots of cups of tea and book reading ;-)

I feel really disappointed in the way the hospital staff treated me. I had two nurses stood either side of my bed arguing over me because I requested oxygen and the nurse that came to take me back to my room took it off of me despite being told I had requested it as I we struggling to breath. I wasn't checked on, I had a tiny bite of my sandwich and it was taken away. I wouldn't have eaten it but they didn't know that. I had to ask for a sick bowl, was not offered. I had a young boy that seemed like he was in training take the thing out of my hand, he wasn't assisted by anyone qualified and got blood all over my bed taking it out. Obviously it's not his fault I bled but he wasn't exactly prepared. I was told I would have to be able to eat/drink, stand without falling and have a wee before I'd be able to leave. I didn't do any of these things and would sent on my way! Wasn't asked if I needed help getting up or getting dressed, wasn't sent home with extra dressing or medication.

I was also told the findings of the procedure as I was just coming round and not with it at all. And then wasn't spoken to about it again. Is that the last il hear? Will I be contacted about a meeting discussing this and next steps? She said she got pictures of what she saw, can I see them? I really feel like all my questions should be answered and me not be sent home wondering

The lightheadedness,so I was told after my lap with ovarian cyst abd adhesions was to do with low blood pressure -which apoarently is quite common after gynae procedures.
I was put on a further drip to up my hydratiin before I was let home -which wasn't till the next day.
Didn't lose my appetite at all -but then, little supresses my appetite tbh!

CatnipMouse · 03/02/2015 16:46

Hi sorry you are feeling so pissed off. Anaesthesia can do funny things to your emotions so that might be why you felt like crying. If you are not sure whether you will get a follow up appt and you have questions, call the consultant's secretary and make it clear that you want to see someone soon or ask for a phone call to clarify things.

Re your nursing care, it sounds like they could probably have been more attentive. You can give feedback / complaints (by letter, PALS or your local HealthWatch). I am glad for you though that you didn't have to stay in overnight, hospitals aren't restful places!!

Hope you are feeling better today?

Christinedonna · 03/02/2015 16:50

Got horrible trapped wind in my shoulder and rib/chest area and feel very sore and crampy as expected but other than that in fine. Wish I had morphine at home with me! That was good stuff

Hi op, hope you're as well as can be. Sorry that your experience was not a good one. When I had my lap, I was given tea and toast, then they made sure I could stand before discharging me. The results of the op were given to my husband as the Dr came round while I was still in the recovery room. I asked the nurse for my results and she explained them to me and explained that I would get an appointment to discuss the results but also that I would need another op to remove the cyst and laser the adhesions.
Also as a pp suggested ring the consultant's secretary for clarification

Has anyone been through the experience of them finding nothing? No signs of endo or indication to my pain or struggling to conceive/miscarriage? I asked before the procedure what might happen if this was the outcome and was told that it would likely be my bowel if that was the case. I struggle to believe that? I have no trouble with my bowel (that I know of) what has that got to do with said problems?

OP posts:
CatnipMouse · 06/02/2015 13:34

hi ... I had a lap because an HSG scan showed a blocked tube, so with the lap they were going to have a look at it and take the tube out if it was manky. However when they did the lap they found nothing wrong, both tubes were fine. Which was good in some ways but of course didn't answer any questions. So I kind of know what you mean. I don't know why bowel issues might be relevant but I am no kind of expert. Has your partner had tests done, cos of course that might explain things? Did you manage to sort out a proper follow up discussion after the surgery to go through your questions?

Christinedonna · 06/02/2015 18:49

No nothing was arranged and I haven't rang to schedule anything yet as I want it to be asap but don't feel up to it yet. Was just going to wait until I do. I really feel like it's something to do with gynae and the thought of it being my bowel seems alien.
