PCOS

Hi

Ive got a family history of PCOS and every symptom there is. Had a blood test and it came back as not having it, has anyone else experienced this? Does whether you are on or off the pill have an impact?

Bf said I sounded disappointed that I dont have it, and its not that I just am so sure I do

What hormone levels were looked at and on what day of the cycle was this measured?. If this was done on the wrong day the test result is meaningless.

If you were on the pill when the blood test was done, the pill can skew the result. It is pointless having such tests done whilst taking the pill.

www.verity-pcos.org.uk is a good website.

You will need to be persistent in order to get answers.

I dont know as they didnt ask me to track my cycle. Nor did they ask if I was on the pill. They just called to say that I didnt have it.

Should I go back?

Who is the "they" you mention; is it the GP surgery or clinic that did the blood test?. Whoever they were, they sound completely clueless.

You need to be totally off the pill before having any blood tests done; its a wasted effort otherwise.

Blood tests can be done according to calendar days if periods are irregular in nature. You need a day 2 test initially to check and compare your LH level against that of your FSH level. Sometimes there is an imbalance of LH to FSH; one of the indicators of PCOS.

Sorry I meant the GP.

It all seemed wrong, I had to chase for ages for the results too.

Thinking about changing GPs and trying again with it all

Go back or try again! I was convinced I had PCOS, had the blood tests and they were fine (9 FSH/9 LH) so no apparent PCOS as the levels were the same. I had another one a few months later and it came back as 6 LH/10 FSH. Ta da: PCOS diagnosis. Lucky me. Smile If your levels differ (e.g. 5/8, 3/7) then it could be an indication of PCOS.

Crumbelina · 04/11/2014 21:16

Oops, meant to say, "go back or try another GP".

To be honest, quite a lot of GPs can be a bit clueless about PCOS and fertility. I had to keep going back to different GPs to get a second opinion and various tests.

Im glad its not just me, it made me feel like im going mad but I just KNOW I've got it. Obviously I dont want it, but I do want to start ttc if I am right

Crumbelina i assume you have lh and fsh wrong way round? As lh is the higher 1 in pcos. Otherwise it would be fsh rising naturally as you age.
My DSis doesnt have it yet i do.
Possibly you are managing with diet and exercise.

Get a printout. As both lh and fsh can be within limits but if Lh is 2:1 fsh
So say
6:3 both within limit but 1 raised against other.

What symptoms?
Could it be a thyroid issue instead?

flanjabelle · 07/11/2014 07:35

Have you had an internal scan?

naty1 · 07/11/2014 09:50

How old are you?
I would ttc if you are ready to anyway.
As people 1/3 of infertile are unexplained anyway.

Whether or not you have pcos you could still be pretty fertile or not at all.
We found i had pcos and thought- ah thats it... But it wasnt it was s sperm issue.
Though i agree it would be great to know you have it if you do as you can choose to ttc earlier and prioritise it.

My main clue was really irregular cycles.

inconceivableme · 08/11/2014 08:56

Have you had an internal scan to check your ovaries? All my bloods were 'normal' and I ovulate most months on my own but my ovaries are very polycystic which confirmed PCO although not PCOS. Both can affect fertility though.

grace555xo · 12/11/2014 15:54

Hi everyone im 20 and was diagnosed with pcos when i was 13 no period for 3 months now. I have been with my partner for the past 3 years no contraception nothing happening. Went for my first gynecology appointment today need bloods ect and ohneeds semen analysis consultant looked back at urine test from last year and said i had a positive result for chlamydia and gp failed to inform seems everything is going wrong :'( anyone know what the first treatment will be from consultant?

katy14 · 25/11/2014 19:23

I've just been diagnosed with pcos. I'm 38 and ttc second child. No probs with the first but have been ttc for almost 12 months now. I have my first appt with the hospital on Friday and am getting nervous. I know there are still option but fear the worst given my age. Would be interested to hear any other experiences as would like to know what to expect. Grace555xo, how are you getting on?

Roxy1212 · 08/01/2015 13:39

My bloods were borderline when I got tested the second time (and totally fine the first!) but I had other symptoms and they sent me for a scan which confirmed PCOs. PCOs + other symptoms = PCOS, whatever the bloods say! Ask for an ultrasound if you have other symptoms

It's definitely worth getting a second opinion. Even when I had an internal scan, the sonographer mis-diagnosed me as having no PCOS. Later, when undergoing further infertility investigations two consultants (separately) told me that I definitely have PCOS. However, both also said that I should be able to conceive naturally despite PCOS. Very confusing!
