HELP!! Newbie! Don't know what to do...

Hi all,

I am brand new to this & after reading for some weeks, bit the bullet and joined! So hi

My partner and I are ttc (this is the only abbreviation I know sorry!)

I already have a 9 year old daughter from a previous relationship and never thought I would have more children...

8 weeks ago, I found out that I may encounter some problems. Following the (difficult) removal of a copper coil, I informed my GP that i only have a period 5 times per year. On this basis, he told me my chances of conception were very slim. We tested my partner on my GPs advice just as a precautionary measure and devastatingly came back as a very low sperm count meaning we would have double the struggle with problems on both sides. I've been struggling with my emotions since and have the shortest fuse I feel sorry for my family putting up with me.

I am now on day 40 of my cycle and am yet to ovulate (I test every day) Just wondered if there was anybody out there who may have similar issues?

Did your GP mean that your chances of natural conception were very slim? Did you discuss IVF with him/her? To me, that would be the most obvious next step. It can take quite a while to get that ball rolling, so depending on your age and how quickly you want to get pregnant, you may want to ask for a referral soon. (You can obviously keep trying for natural conception in the meantime.) The IVF clinic will be able to advise whether the medications they give you will stimulate ovulation in your case and whether ICSI would be suitable for overcoming your partner's low sperm count. Thank you for your reply guin Yes natural conception chances were slim and that was before my partners poor results. I am going to discuss IVF/ICSI with my GP at my appt on weds, but am doubtful that I will wait for NHS - if I had my way, I would start it tomorrow. I am fortunate enought to be financially secure, and far too impatient (let alone what this whole predicament is doing to my mental state) to wait for NHS so will pay privately. I just wish I knew more about what it entailed and what to ask/expect!

I would get tests at a fertility clinic if you have the money _ I think a previous child means you don't get nhs funding anyway but also GP's are crap with fertility stuff in my experience. Although I had a lovely nhs fertility dr but it was a 3 month wait to get an appointment.

You can effectively start tomorrow and just refer yourself to fertility clinic. If you are paying, you will be surprised about how quickly the ball can get rolling….good luck

Also, sorry just re-reading your post. Obviously there is probably a medical reason why your periods are so sparse, but that doesn't mean it cannot be put right, so try and be positive about that. Not everything is medical either, there are always things like acupuncture, diet etc that can help regulate periods (I know this is possibly making light of the situation), but just because you don't have regular periods at this stage doesn't mean you are unable to conceive. As for DH - get him tested again. My DH first test was so disastrous, they marched us straight to icsi. He's never had a bad one since. Get him to start on the vitamins, loose pants etc….a fertility clinic will test him again anyway and will give you results within the day.

BH had test no2 today, results go straight to GP this time as was a free re-test! Hoping his nerves from 1st test were a big impact on 1st test. Today he was more comfortable and more easy with the process. Maybe clutching at straws but I'll take anything! Haha!
