Quick background: I have one child from a successful fresh IVF cycle. Our infertility was unexplained as while I have polycystic ovaries, I ovulate naturally and all other tests on DH and I were normal.
We have 3 frozen embryos from our fresh cycle and had started the process for a frozen embryo cycle. We've not had unprotected sex since DS was born just over 2 years ago. We'd always planned to do an FET, mainly as we feel a stong attachment to the frozen embryos and an obligation to use them first should we want to try for more children.
So, to cut to the chase....we are about to start an FET cycle and I had a scan at the clinic yesterday mid-cycle to check that I'm good to go with starting down-regulation injections from day 21 i.e. in a week's time. I left the clinic with the down-regulation drugs - all paid for and the scans too - but on the scan, the nurse saw a v large follicle, indicating that I'm about to ovulate... DH and I now can't decide whether we should put off the FET for another month, get busy asap and see if we get lucky this month naturally.
Either way, we don't want to delay too long - I'm 3/4 of the way through my 30s and would like not too big an age gap between our current DC and any sibling.
But if we did conceive naturally we'd know that we've got one v good embryo and two other good ones frozen that we wouldn't use (we only want 1 more child ideally) and so would have a dilemma about what to do with them....We may have that dilemma anyway if we do FET if the first one works but there'll only be a maximum of 2 embryos left to decide about in that scenario, and probably the less 'good' ones.
There's also the cost side of it. We've already paid out about £500 for scans (on an earlier abandoned FET cycle) and drugs to the clinic and would have to pay a further £1200 for the full FET cycle if we proceed. We have the money but it's still a lot.
Part of us is curious to know whether we could conceive naturally now - anecdotally it seems that people often find they can conceive subsequent children naturally, even if they needed help for their first, and it would be good to not have to spend the money and do lots of drugs again - but on the other hand, there's no certainty we would and if we did, we'd have the unused embryo dilemma magnified.
