PCOS + Chances of been offered clomid if overweight

Hi everyone,

I'm new to this site but already finding it very useful.

I have PCOS - was told at age 18 that I will struggle to conceive. It never really bothered me when I was younger, to busy enjoying myself to think about it.

I am now happily settled with my partner of 4 yrs and we have had unprotected sex for just over a year (i stopped taking dianette approx 18 months ago)

I have just started to document my cycles and I am eating healthy and trying to lose weight which I find so hard- and know many people will sigh when they read this but I have never really eaten badly and I'm relatively active, probably not as active as I was a couple of years ago but that is due to me working 1 full time job and 2 part time jobs!!

My main question is - has anyone been offered or had success with clomid whilst been over weight ?
I am at the doctors this afternoon to request a referral to my hospital to discuss it further with a consultant.
I am also going to ask if they will prescribe meteor min as I have seem improvement in my pcos symptoms and improved weight loss when I have taken that in the past.

All thoughts and opinions welcome

Thank you x

I've had clomid but I'm not overweight. What I can tell you is that everyone was lovely, if you don't meet some criteria (smoker here) they help you reach the criteria, in our case that was smoking cessation.

Hope all goes well for you. Thanks

Hi a friend went to the fertility clinic and was told she had to get her BMI lower, towards the 30 NHS limit but not to 30 for clomped - mainly because of links between lower weight and that helping natural fertility as well as guidelines. To qualify for IUI or IVF the weight limit was strictly applied however - but she conceived naturally 6 months into her weight loss programme and now has 2 children despite PCOS.

Hi jenjenwoo my story is similar. Diagnosed at 18 with PCOS. Wasn't bothered till I meet DH. I will say didn't wait a year for tests after 3 minths I went to my GP and asked for blood tests to see if I was ovulating. I explained about my PCOS and said that if the test showed Ovulation I would wait a year before seeing gyn but if I wasn't I wanted an immediate referral. Test showed no ovalulation so went to see gyn and he asked me to lose 10% of my body weight before taking clomid as it boosts fertility naturally. I was overweight before and still was overweight think my Bmi was 31. I then also had a Dye test to check my tubes were and clear any debris. At no point was I told being overweight would stop me being prescribed clomid. Consultant recommended paleo diet for me and it was TBF v effective. Just I case your wondering I do have a DS and managed to get pg on 1st cycle. I don't know if this was lucky or just a combination of everything. Wishing you lots of luck and hope you get the outcome you want Smile ps sorry for the essay.

Hi Jen

I will be prescribed tamoxifen in late July. I had a phonecall last week from the nurse to say that this will only be precribed if I get my BMI to 30 and under! I have my appointment in 9 weeks and I need to drop my BMI from 36 to 30 if I want the tablets.

So in answer to your question, yes I've been requested to lose weight if I want this treatment. If I do go private then I don't need to lose the weight Hmm

Thanks for all your advice.

I've have heard so many different outcomes that it has me worried. I sometimes feel it is the luck of the draw depending on the hospital and consultant that you see.

I saw my doctor and she was awful, this she looked at me once the whole time I was there, she didn't take anything on board and I felt like was having to sell myself to her!

She eventually offered to refer me to a hospital that I had told her I did not want to go too! I requested the Leeds infertility centre and she said that it wasn't in my area so I had to advise my doctor that I have a right to choose my hospital and book my own appointment with them.

So I'm booked with seacroft hospital in June and until then I'm just concentrating in documenting my cycles, exercise and healthy eating, but I don't think my bmi will be below 30 in time for my initial appointment.

I can't believe how stressful this all is and to top it off 3 friends have announced pregnancies in the last 2 weeks!!! I'm happy for them but extremely jealous!!!

Anyways thanks again for all you help and info, it's reassuring to know I'm not he only one.
