Hi all,

My husband has rheumatoid arthritis and because of the drugs he's on we can't try to conceive. He managed to come off his drugs for a couple of months last year and gave some samples to the local fertility clinic which have been frozen. We've decided to take the plunge and try with these samples(!) and have been told it will be IUI to start with. We only have enough samples for a maximum of three attempts. We've never been able to try for a baby because of him being on medication so we have no idea whether I'm ok or not (never had any problems with periods, normal weight etc). We've been told I need to have a HSG test (xray with dye) and I'm really worried.

I know going down this route with the fertility clinic is going to involve some invasive treatments, but I'm really not sure about this test - I get really worked up about smear tests!!! I just have problems with hospitals, doctors etc and get anxious to the point of crying. I know that if I am lucky enough to get pregnant that tests etc will be done, (and there's labour to get through), but in my mind that's ok as it would have to happen - this test in my mind is 'voluntary'.

Can anyone who's had this test tell me that it's not that bad and I really shouldn't be getting this worked up?

Thanks in advance :-)

Hello

I have had this test, it was line a smear only in a X-ray theatre, you do feel a build up of pressure whilst it goes in and you get period type cramps but as soon as the pressures built up it passes, I was fine after, I didn't take any pain relief but they do say ibuprofen 30 min before

Your much better off having this, if you have issues with your tubes it puts you at risk of an ectopic pregnancy, which would mean much more invasive treatment, there's also a risk if you have hydrosalpinx (blocked tube with fluid) that it can prevent embryos from implanting, I'm sure you wouldn't any risk towards pregnancy especially when you may be on limited sperm, also if there's issues with your tubes you may go straight to ivf with the samples you have now xx
