ivf: worried I got up too soon after embryo transfer and ruined everything

Had embryo transfer at day5, told to lie down for ten minutes but worried I got sooner than 10 minutes as I need to go to toilet. Think I have runied everything now.

No, you haven't! 10 minutes is hardly here or there in the scheme of things, it is more to let you get over the experience of having the transfer done. They tuck the embryos in firmly and they won't fall out - Honest.

When is your test day?

piprabbit · 06/03/2012 14:30

Whether you got up after 5,8 or 10 minutes will make no difference to the outcome.
Good Luck.

AlanMoore · 06/03/2012 14:30

I used to work in an IVF clinic and you would have had to get up straight away to let the next lady in for her transfer! Many women also needed to sprint off for a wee straight away. The embryos will not "come out", they are safely in there, you just have to wait now.

Which I appreciate is awful, and I can understand you panicking about every little thing, but honestly, as long as you turn up for your ET you can't do anything to influence the result now. Best of luck, I hope it's good news.

worldgonecrazy · 06/03/2012 14:34

Imagine that the embryos are being held between two sponges which are pushing gently together. It's not going anywhere, don't worry. Good luck for a BFP.

aftereight · 06/03/2012 14:35

I went to Strada for pizza immediately after my ET, and was convinced they would fall out there... I now have a 7 year old Grin

realnappiesmum · 06/03/2012 15:04

Thank you all for your replies. They are all reassuring. Didn't get much sleep night after ET as was worrying so much so now worrying that all the worrying will stop embryos implanting. Too Much Worrying! Got another 12 days to go until pregnancy testing. Works out to be Mother's Day!! The waiting is unbelieviable. Looking for every sign and symptoms. Can you get false positives or negatives by testing too soon. On progesterone pessaries so not sure i they would effect result.

Please try not to test. The clinic tell you to do it their way with good reason. I know it's an unbearably long time but the time WILL pass! If you are going bananas can you ring the clinic and ask about the testing protocol, or dig out any literature you've been given about it?

With home pregnancy tests I believe that false negatives are more common than false positives, but where I worked we advised against using any home test and waiting for the blood results to come back - that way we could see if the levels were high enough for a viable pregnancy and arrange to retest if levels were borderline/low positives.

It is heartbreaking to get a negative result however it happens but I think it is probably better in the case of non-viable positives to KNOW that it isn't good news from the off than get a positive on a hpt and then have all the hopes dashed when the bloods come back.

My knowledge is several years out of date now though so things may have altered and all clinics have their own ways of working.

realnappiesmum · 06/03/2012 15:57

Only been told by clinic to do home pregnancy test, they didn't say about blood test. Should I be having blood test? How soon should I be getting symptoms of pregnancy? Do they start once embryos have implanted or before? Sorry lots of questions I forgot to ask clinc.

No direct experience but I suspect you were told to lie down for ten minutes to ensure you didn't pass out when jumping up straight away. Medical interventions have all sorts of funny effects on people.

Re symptoms - well in my own natirally occurring pregnancies I've never had symptom till after testing when period was late. I've seen many people on here say they've had symptoms before but tbh our bodies play all sorts of tricks on us with this one and no 'symptom' will tell you one way or the other. I hope you get great news on Mother's Day Smile

ProlificYoungGentlemenBreeder · 06/03/2012 16:24

Nothing to add but good luck!

Itsboywonder · 06/03/2012 16:24

I always struggled to get the full bladder thing just right, on one of our attempts we were kept waiting and my bladder was so full that I had to go to the loo before the embryo transfer.

If it helps I have an almost 3 year old and when his embryo was transfered I was so desperate for the loo not only did I get up way too early but I didn't wait for them to lower the the bed so I jumped down and hit the ground with a big thud, I was convinced that I had ruined everything, I was wrong! Good luck.

worldgonecrazy · 06/03/2012 16:33

realnappies the blood tests are used to check for the viability of a pregnancy. Unfortunately a large number of pregnancies end in early miscarriage and one of the early signs of a pregnancy that is unlikely to be succesful is the pregnancy hormone levels in the blood not doubling each day.

I had very veiny boobs, that's how I knew I was pregnant, but it could have been a side-effect of the pessaries I was given. I did 'know' I was pregnant before the positive test, and I tested 3 days earlier than the clinic said and got a positive test. I was pregnant with twins though so there would have been more of the pregnancy hormone zooming around my system.

You said day 5 transfer? Does that mean it was blastocysts that were transferred?

realnappiesmum · 06/03/2012 18:49

Hi, yes it was 2 blastocysts transfered. My sister had natural pregnancy last, year and her symptoms started a week before she tested so looking out for any signs, had very sore breasts after Hcg injection last week but they are not as sore anymore also was really bloated up until yesterday but that has settled as well. Am I focusing too much? Hard not to.

P.S, Itsboywonder, those beds can be really high can't they? Hope you didn't hurt yourself.

Definitely don't worry about getting up too soon - when I had my two blasts transferred (the two blasts which grew into my very-soon-to-be 2 year old asleep in the next room) I had such a full bladder that I sprinted for the bathroom for a wee as soon as ET was over.

Re testing, my clinic said 14 days post egg-collection (which is effectively 14 days past ovulation), so 9 days post blast transfer (which was one of the advantages of a blast transfer - less time on the tww!). The risk of testing too soon is that the residual HCG in your system from the trigger shot can give a false positive result. How quickly the trigger shot is processed by your body depends from woman to woman but you wouldn't want to test earlier than 10 days past egg collection.

realnappiesmum · 11/03/2012 15:15

no pregnancy symptoms 7 days post blastocyst transfer. Feeling dispondant and empty:(

OP posts:
OddBoots · 11/03/2012 16:01

Please don't worry, I have had 5 transfers resulting in 3 pregnancies as well as 2 natural conceptions (all to term and healthy) and didn't have any pregnancy symptoms at all until about 6 weeks along with any of them. With my first transfer I even got what I thought was my period the day before testing but it still worked.

realnappiesmum · 11/03/2012 16:35

Hi, thank you for reply. That is good to know. Do you know about testing early? 2ww is hell! I know I could get a false positive due to Hcg trigger before egg collection. But can u get false negatives at this stage if it is too early to test?

OP posts:
OddBoots · 11/03/2012 16:51

Sadly you can get both false pos and false neg at this stage so try to hold on until your clinic advised you to test - is that another 2 days?

realnappiesmum · 11/03/2012 17:02

My test date is the 18th march so another week to go!

OP posts:
OddBoots · 11/03/2012 17:54

Oh goodness, I confess I wouldn't be able to hold on that long. I'd be testing on Tuesday but I am sure the clinic would say 'hold on'.

piprabbit · 11/03/2012 18:21

Please try not to test early. Whatever the test stick says, you won't be able to trust it and you will still be worried and anxious. It really is better to wait.

But I know it won't be easy.

realnappiesmum · 11/03/2012 20:07

Trying my best to hold on. Two weeks feels so long. Keep getting upset all the time which I am sure isn't doing any good.

Good Luck!
I have no experience with IVF but regarding pregnancy symptoms - don't over analyse or you will worry unnecessarily- i didn't get any until at least 7 weeks pregnant with both dds. In most cases the hormone itself causes the symptoms and its the hormone you test for so in reality i doubt you can have real symptoms before a positive test - unless implantation pain etc.
