oh this is annoying

The govt will not ban trans fats in food. People should be free to unwittingly eat any old shit.

agree very disappointing. Looks like they have caved in to the big business food lobby. Shows how all their supposed concern for health and '5 a day' stuff is just flim-flam

pointydog · 02/07/2010 20:38

Yep, keeping on the side of big businesses and excusing their lily-liveredness by claiming it would be very nanny-stateish to ban anything to do with food. And trying to get the punters on board byslagging off Jamie Oliver in the process.

agree. I personally don't like Jamie Oliver and always felt that his campaign was set up and Labour helped to give him publicity. So when I read that the new government were sidelining him I was pleased, but then I read this trans fat story and saw what the game was. Pretending that they are on the side of the public and anti nanny state but really being on the side of big business and sod the health of the public.

Coolfonz · 02/07/2010 20:54

while everyone's taxes are going up they are lowering corporation tax 4pc, 1pc/yr for four years...

nice subsidies if you can get `em...

Ryoko · 03/07/2010 17:27

Why should they ban em, if you care read the labels and avoid em, if enough people care and don't buy stuff with em in and avoid products that are not clear about the contents, they will stop using them.

simples.

MrsTittleMouse · 03/07/2010 17:30

They're not clearly labelled though. In the USA you have to clearly label the package with how much trans fat the food contains, by law. Funnily enough, over there, companies have found ways of removing them, and now proudly state "no trans fat" on the labels.

Ryoko · 03/07/2010 18:22

Hence me saying about avoiding products that are not clear on the labels, there are products proudly stating no trans fats on our stuff too.

when in doubt put it back on the shelf that will ensure clear labeling and no trans fats.

Once again we have a Tory 'health' minister that only cares about the 'health' of the bank balances of big business.

They talk about doing things to keep people healthy yet when it comes to the crunch, nothing is done. Taking this poison out of the food chain could save over 10 times as many lives as halving the blood/alcohol limit
save millions on NHS spending but no the ffood lobby will have a cushy number for him when he retires.

I am not a big fan of Jamie (especially after unknowingly going into his 15 Cafe and getting charged two quid for a single esspresso). I applauded what he was trying to do but I think they should have put most of the emphasis on the junior schools where the children could be taught more easily. Taking on the secondary school mob was asking for trouble.

If you want to know about trans fats here is an article.

ryoko, the govt can improve the health of the nation with one simple piece of legislation that will do far far more good than Jo or any campaigning group or individual can do.

Pardon my French but fuck legislation, I distinctly dislike government interference, if you want to avoid trans fats you can, just as you can avoid sugar and salt in your foods if you wish to.

it is up to the public, if people care enough to take the time to read packets or buy things which are not ready made they can avoid trans fats easy.

Quality · 04/07/2010 19:07

But that means children of uneductaed parents will be fed this shit, through no fault of their own, leaving them with health issues such as diabetes and obesity.
If the government cared at all about the poorest of society then they would ban this shit as it is in teh cheapest food that you are more likely to find it.

jodevizes · 04/07/2010 19:41

How about the traffic light system but modified. As well as green, amber, and red, they add a big brown spot for this is a shit product with trans fat in it.

Ryoko · 04/07/2010 20:12

I'm uneducated (literally), if the parents don't care chances are the kids will not, but the kids can read the labels if they wish and be picky.

Point is no one needs to buy the food it's in, my mum had £60 a week to pay for everything for 5 people, we ate tinned veg/fish, pasta and rice (which are still the cheapest foods today).

the stuff trans fats are in today is what we would class as a luxury item.

Government should just make sure we have good labeling.

legoStuckinmyhoover · 04/07/2010 20:25

I think it should be banned-it is a disgrace. People do not know what they are buying and labelling is rubbish across the board on many different ingredients. It does cause a lot of damage and it can be replaced with something else, so why not just ban it?
Really like the big brown spot idea .
