Ryanair in the news...

BBC report on Strathclyde Police boarding a delayed flight...

Seems that French air traffic control were on strike, the plane was due to take off at 14:00 but 4 hours later, due to restrictions on opening their bar (surely they could have just not sold any alcohol!) there were passengers with children raising their voices as they were being kept on the plane and were unable to buy any refreshments.

Ryanair crew called the Police to calm the passengers down, and it seems the Police bought water and chocolate (presumably from Prestwick Airport) and were greeted by loud cheers.

Is this 'jobsworth' gone mad ? While the passenger who spoke to the BBC said the crew were doing their best, it seems crazy to me that they could not have offered the option of light refreshments (at cost, if there was no other way!) to passengers, considering there was no clue about when they would be able to take off.

The plane took off almost 6 hours after planned departure time, which, while not being Ryanair's fault, looks like a massive public relations blunder to me.

I've not flown Ryanair, or Easyjet (no flights in the last 10 years) and the bulk of flights before that were longer distances (Far East, Canada, USA) and obviously at higher fares, but one would have thought a bit of common sense might have been used (contacting HQ if necessary) to keep the passengers happy... or is that no longer important for some airlines ?

Ryanair at notorious for treating their customers like shit. It doesn't suprise me in the slightest. God knows why anyone flies with them.

This is nothing to do with Ryanair though- I've been on flights in Spain and the US when this has happened (neither were Ryanair) I think it's something to do with International Aviation law, once you are on board, you can't get off, save for emergency situations etc and it's all to do with which country's jurisdiction you fall under once on the tarmac. (or something ) In Spain we were on the tarmac for almost 4 hours in August, and the cabin crew couldn't give us anything to drink, because until the plane takes off, by int'l law they can't open things etc)

So, it is jobsworthyness gone mad, but not, this time, because it's Lyingair.

They could have been on that plane until 8 this morning, and not allowed to get off ?

The impression I had was that Ryanair was suggesting it would only lead to further delays if they allowed people off as they would have to load the plane again later.

It may boil down to money (presumably the airside staff have a fee for each load / unload operation whether it is just for moving the steps or handling baggage...

I felt it was just bloodymindedness on the part of the Ryanair crew - Callisto's comment might suggest that too, but if it is a UK regulation by the CAA it needs review!

Don't take any notice of me, I just loathe Ryanair and take every opportunity to slag them off...

not ryanairs fault as explained above.
I had the same thing happen to me on BA.
and while I'm here I'll just say how brilliant ryanair are, rarely fly with anyone else.

NetworkGuy · 25/06/2010 13:46

Did BA offer any refreshments ?

sorry was out. They did not once the plane was grounded, there was some form of airport strike so the step/ladder vehicle couldn't come out for about 2-3 hours. because we were on the runway they weren't allowed to serve.
