Bradford Murders

Once again, as in the Ipswich case a few years ago, women working in prostitution prove to be vulnerable to the attentions of murderous nutters.

Proving again that we prefer to ignore prostitution until people start dying, what's the way forward? I can't personally subscribe to the view that women in prostitution are all there out of choice, jovially plying their trade 'Belle De Jour' style and simply in need of a cosy brothel to stay safe. Making the kerb-crawler take more responsibility for their actions seems like a good move. But so many women are forced into exploitation through dependence on drugs or alcohol or coerced to provide money for a pimp or trafficker. A vicious circle of which prostitution is just one segment.

What are your thoughts?

If you want to seriously tackle prostitution, gun crime, burglary, mugging...you need to drastically reform the drug laws.

Addicts need to be given heroin and crack in a safe, monitored way.

What would remain of the (prostitution) industry needs to be heavily regulated and controlled, a la Germany. It becomes a labour problem.

I see very little likelihood of any of that happening soon. Politicians much prefer piety and locking people up.
